A thing I see a lot lately is people trading or making offers in DM's.

I know it's not against the rules like with the villagers, but it's sometimes very frustrating. Someone is looking for something.. people make offers in his/her topic and after a while you hear that someone has made an offer in the DM. Well not everytime because sometimes you can wait for hours for a response you never get.. especially as a seller this is very frustrating.

As a seller you made a deal, but in the meantime someone has send a DM to the buyer. It's not just a bad feeling that the deal is off, but in my opinion it's rude too to do it in secret.

Is it maybe possible to think about the rules considering offers in DM so that there's more transparancy? Just like with the villagers? :)

Hi @Larsi,

While I can understand your frustration, it would be unfair for us to tighten rules on how people can communicate with each other without a clear need to. This is something we very rarely hear complaints about, so to the best of our knowledge the community is happy with the way things are. We make sure that auctions are transparent because users are in direct competition with each other. However, when it comes to selling threads it is completely up to the trader to choose who they wish to trade with and how they wish to communicate with them. This system works, and has worked here on TBT for many years, and if we were to make it stricter now without a clear need to do so then people would see it as us being unnecessarily controlling.

Hope you don't mind me throwing in 2 cents. As someone who takes trades/deals to DMs I personally do it so that the thread doesn't end up with 50 of my posts while setting everything up with the other person. Also bc one use dodo codes are easier to throw in a DM anyway. Not really to be a secretive thing.

Hmmm fair point ;) It has is pros and cons I guess and I don't think people really send complains about it because it's strange to say to mods "this person let me wait for so long blabla" 🤣 Feels childish but as a seller it's just frustrating so that's why I came with the idea :)

Sometimes people do it over DMs as it is easier for both the seller and buyer to keep track off the transaction sometime. It can also allow for quicker communication. Lastly, sometimes people do not want to publicy list what they will offer for something as someone may use that as leverage in the future in another tranaction or just so people dont know what you can max an offer at.

No after closing a deal I don't mind DM's.. same for dodo codes :)

But I mean things like this:

Someone is looking for stuff in trade for tbt's. Some people react with the hope of getting a great deal and get rid of their stuff but again someone in the DM's is coming in between ;)

The good thing is the topic starter mentioned it, but in some cases they don't and you reserve it for them and even say no to other people who wants it because you reserved it for someone else without knowing the deal is off.

Hmmm yes that makes sense too. :) didn't think about it that way.

I understand and feel the same way, I typically don't like to allow offers from DMs because if someone really wanted that item and they saw someone posted a higher price, they might want to offer more. This thou starts getting into auction territory esp when the thread was never an auction and should not turn into one. Selling threads should not turn into auctions threads as that ruins the point of making it a selling thread.

I still accept offers/trades in DMs cause like someone stated above, sometimes people don't want to post publically on the thread which I have no problem with.

Also what others have said makes me realize even more why people might want to accept DM offers, I hadn't considered those reasons before and it makes much more sense now.
