I probably should’ve posted this before using a gift card to buy the game. I just want to know what is everyone’s opinion on the game? What do you like and what do you not like about it?

I’ve only played the first Paper Mario and part of the second (sadly my sister sold my first paper mario game), and don’t remember them very well.

I’m not very far in the game so far, but I don’t think I really like this 360 degree battle system so far. I liked the straight forward system in the first one. I’m in Toad town right now and was kinda overwhelmed seeing all the pipes and wasn’t sure what to focus on first. I wasted a lot of time trying to 100% the previous area “objectives” as well (wasn’t sure if it was possible on first bisit, but i guess it’s not).

The story seems good enough so far, though it kinda reminds me of something; not sure if that’s good or bad.

I just finished Origami King about a week or two ago, actually. The original Paper Mario on the N64 is one of my top 5 favorite games of all-time and I also love Thousand-Year Door, but have been pretty disappointed by the games that followed (I do have a little bit of a soft spot for Color Splash though, extremely flawed though it may be).

However, I actually REALLY loved Origami King! It has a bit of a slow start, but once you get to the second streamer area, I think it starts to take off. The battle system grew on me (and I think it works particularly well in boss fights), but agreed, I'd prefer something more like the first two games had. That said, the rest of the gameplay is fun since the locations in the game are well-varied and aesthetically pleasing, and they actually feel like real places in the world of the game (part of my complaint with Sticker Star and Color Splash is that it didn't even feel like a "world" anymore, just a mish-mash of places loosely connected on a world map).

Characters are good too; I think having a more traditional partner system would've been great, but the characters who DO actually join you all had distinct personalities (along with Olivia, who I didn't like at first, but was quite attached to by the end), and the dialogue in this game gave me more legitimate chuckles than nearly anything else lol. Music is also fantastic, especially the battle themes and some of the "vocal" songs.

Origami King is firmly my 3rd favorite in the series now. There were even moments where I was like "man, I just really love this" and it was enjoyable practically the whole time. The game has definite flaws, but it was fun and made me happy while playing it, and in the end, I feel like that's all that really matters with a video game. I'd still prefer the series to go back to its roots like the 64 game, but Origami King was enjoyable enough to me that it actually made me think the unthinkable: that I could be okay with the series still not returning to 64/TTYD-style if it could keep up this level of quality.

My favorite is the TTYD and while this game still pales in comparison to the original paper mario & TTYD, it’s still a really fun game! It’s 10000% better than the sticker star & color splash games imo and feels a bit less gimmicky than those two.

I agree that the battle combat gets really repetitive after a while but once you start getting health upgrades, you can “skip” some battles by hitting/jumping weaker enemies to beat them without going to the battle. I do like the boss battle mechanic, it’s definitely more puzzle based than classic RPG but it adds an interesting element!

the art for this game is just *chefs kiss* so amazing and colorful. kudos to the team for making the world so vibrant & beautiful 😍 I was hesitant in getting this game after being burned by the last 2 games in the franchise but this game is worth playing imo 😊

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your opinion with me 😊. I’m glad to hear that you really enjoyed it. :) I’m definitely enjoying it so far and have been trying to keep an open mind in spite not being fond of the battle system. The story seems pretty good and the dialogue as well; it has been awhile since I played any Nintendo game aside from ACNH, so I kinda had low expectations, but already I had a couple chuckles :). I’m definitely looking forward to meeting more characters and progressing.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with me as well! :) . I haven’t played the other Paper Marios aside from the first one and a bit of the second, but I really do love the art and the paper style as opposed to the 3D (I mean the 3D is nice, but I think all the characters are extremely cute as paper ^.^) Glad to hear that. I was debating between this and the 3D mario collection; I would’ve went for the amiibo cards before either if they were in stock, but they weren’t and I wanted a second switch game.
