I was disciplined to some extent and applied some personal rules before starting NH. First and foremost was completing the critterpedia and making it a priority. Personally, in my mind, completing the critterepedia, completing the museum, paying off all my loans, and getting a 5 star island is essentially a soft beating the game. Yes, I know there is no beating the game, but for me that was my bottom line and when the time comes and I take a long break from the game I could be satisfied knowing I met my own requirements.
Another rule that was applicable only on my main island was that a villager could not leave until I obtained their photo. My second island has no rules, and pretty much anything goes as it was meant to cycle and give people their dreamies. My third island happened upon chance last March when the Sanrio amiibo cards were released. I unboxed my Special edition ACNH Switch and scanned all of the Sanrio Amiibos to that island. I hardly even play that switch but the general theme was Sanrio.
A rule that wasn't set in stone was breed all the flowers by myself. I was able to breed every flower save a blue rose due to a summer 2020 hiatus.
