because A. it’s really obvious some ratings are just bunk, and B. kids go through and can handle different things, and sometimes parents bar them from things they could be okay with. (Or expose them to things that are worse than whatever they’re barring. For example, now I’m fine with watching medical surgery shows but I was very verbally uncomfortable with it as a kid, yet my mom put it on like it was totally fine, and to this day that honestly probably has left a subconscious negative mark on me and my perception of blood etc - honestly tho I’m still not ok with watching this surgery on animals and she still casually throws that on so screw what I’m actually saying to her and consenting to viewing I guess.)
Sure, a kid can get the wrong idea from Chowder but in that case it’s the parent’s job to step in and talk and take responsibility. I grew up with The Big Bang Theory (this is despite it being rated M here, my mom had such a casual perception of it that I was arbitrarily allowed) and that show was full of misogyny and transphobia and general bitterness honestly. She never spoke to me about that. I grew out of it because of real better life experiences and some people I could talk to. it isn’t even because my parents were responsible and taught me better in that case but that could have helped and they just had really arbitrary standards for what to show me because of how much they trusted the ratings and because of really silly perceptions on certain things being ok to them so it must be ok for me. In their defense the 00’s were a terrible time in regards to transphobia with casual transpobia everywhere and it was hardly being called out at all and even more people didn’t understand but that’s another topic.
In the age of the Internet kids are even likelier to stumble onto things that aren’t okay for them and I get the sinking feeling that there would be more parents blaming the kids for accidentally finding things rather than taking the blame as adults for being uninvolved.
according to our ratings board, this is as bad for children as monster hunter:
Also, the last Harry Potter films were rated MA15+ here, and I was still in primary school, but I was allowed to see those (in theaters no less)- and honestly, I don’t think that had a negative impact on me. Am I saying to show it all to kids, NO but it was clearly something I personally could handle, and I wish I got more grace for that with some of the goofier ratings, and my mom listening more when I didn’t want to see certain imagery, and more involement in general. Regardless from now I am putting this in PMs. Sorry for putting this much in the topic on the first place.
