Purchases you regret

So this was a big purchase, but I sometimes regret buying my house. We house hunted for a long time before finally settling on a house that met most of our requirements, but not all. We thought we could live without those few things (a second bathroom, full carpeting, etc.) or add them later, but it has not worked out that way at all.

The recession hit not too long after we bought our house so we were in really bad financial shape for several years. Then, things around the house deteriorated and we had to spend what little money we did have fixing those things instead of making the improvements we wanted to make. We had to refinance just to keep the house and now we owe way more on the house than it's worth so we can't just sell it and move without forking out a lot of cash.

There are still things I like about the house, but I often see more of its flaws than its potential nowadays. I don't feel like we rushed into the purchase at all, but it was our first time buying a house and we made mistakes. If I could ever get out of this debt and free myself from this house, I would have a much better idea of what to look for in the future.

Most of my purchase regrets are food purchases. Stuff like different flavors of instant noodles, new Oreos flavors, or chips. Out of all of them, the worst food that I've ever tried was the Cherry Coke Oreos. I like Cherry Coke and Oreos so I should like this right? Nope. It had a nasty cherry flavor with some type of Pop Rocks. I hate Pop Rocks.

My most recent regret was buying a wooden bed-in-breakfast serving tray. I bought it with the intention to serve my family whenever we would get sick. However, the legs of this thing are rounded, so you couldn't have it standing upright on a table without it folding over. It didn't come with a latch, so the legs kept opening when I would have them folded. My mom spilled her drink because the tray got caught on one of her lacy table runners.

It's just an awful product. I left a negative review on Amazon. If anyone is thinking about buying a bed-breakfast tray, then I would either recommend one with built in legs or a chaffing tray.

Same. I bought a bunch of Oreo packs with flavors I didn't try yet and they are still in the cupboard a year later.

The last thing I bought that maybe I shouldn't have is Green Tea Listerine. I don't quite regret it but it's a weird experience each time I use it. It tastes like perfume first, then green tea, then chemical, then raspberry, then green tea again. My brain can't process that flavor.

I kind of regret spending a few hundred dollars on merchandise for this one fandom I really wanna quit, all the merchandise is really cute and all, I'm happy with it, but the reason I bought it was for that game, if I quit it would feel really strange having a ton of fan merchandise for I game I no longer play.
Me with my Neptunia fangirl phase and fixation. I can't really sell the stuff I had since some went broke or just.. obscure so yeah.

Oh, I have just remembered some more purchases I regret.
- I bought that thing to transfer pokemon from old games to 3DS twice. The 1st time was to transfer all my stuff, but the 2nd one was to transfer just 1 pokemon for a petty reason and I regret it lol, wish I could get those $10 back (it was cheaper, but later they made it so you only can transfer $10 bills to eshop instead of just the game's worth)
- I also bought colors3D because I wanted it lots when I was little so I thought ''hey lets make 13yo me happy now that I can'', but yeah drawing on a 3DS isnt the most comfortable thing, it barely has tools and I got actual professional drawing programs on my laptop, so as you can imagine I haven't used it more than twice.
- And spent another $10 on cookie run around 2 years ago too. It was more a ''thanks you'' gift than to actually buy stuff, but I dislike that company now and I dont play that game anymore. Was fun the years it lasted tho.
Soo.. add $30 to my regrettable purchases

Definitely some clothes as well, I mean you find a cool store, buy some stuff to support them but you end up giving most away cause you never used them. I mean I still have some but yeah lol.

Also in a way the new phone I got last year, I wanted to switch to an Android phone because alarm widget and I couldn't really get a better iPhone without paying hundreds/thousands of $$$ so I got a rather cheap and first I thought good working one. But google is even more obnoxious than iOS plus the lack of mine's customization notifs and some other stuff made me regret it.

This is silly but I think about it quite often. In fact, I thought about it yesterday. I was really poor in university and I was debating whether or not to buy this 16 dollar solar powered plant item. Eventually I bought it and I didn't eat for the rest of the day to make up for it. The regret ate away at me, because it was an unnecessary purchase. A couple months later, I walk into a store and see the same exact item for 5 bucks. Not only did I spend on something unnecessary, I was ripped off! I threw it out when we moved because it made me feel awful and we didn't have the space anyway. The guilt stayed with me throughout my adulthood and it weighed on me heavily (times were tough, the housing market had crashed, we were in a recession, etc) until I was able to get a decent job in another country. Now I look back and laugh because I buy unnecessary stuff that I like all the time. So did my parents, even at that time. Why did I beat myself up over a small mistake when literally the adults in my life were doing far worse? Even though legally I was an adult, you actually don't know much when you're that age. It did teach me to be careful about my purchases but I find I'm naturally a very frugal and cautious person so I've had more regrets for things I DIDN'T buy than things I did.

A lot of computer games, especially those on Steam. Also nerdy anime stuff I don't really like anymore...just why lol.
Oh my god, I'm so happy I didn't have the means to buy all the anime stuff I wanted as a kid. It was bad enough having to get rid of all the Naruto and Fairy Tail mangas I collected over the years

Yeah definitely. I gave some to my then boyfriend but yeah also a lot of stuff I couldn't really sell back either so it was rip money.

I regret buying a lot of games for my ps4 😭 but the one that’s a massive waste of money is the sims4 cause I ended up getting it as a gift on my computer which I find so much easier to control than playing on my PlayStation

A Nintendo Switch Lite. I mean, in the end I managed to sell it for 5€ more than I bought it, but I still felt the regret. Also I purchased once a Tamagotchi that I thought looks cool for quite some money and I ended up not liking it at all and lost like 10€ on reselling it 😅

got sucked in to a mobile game called Lords some years ago and spent too much money on micro-transactions. So embarrassing. Never ever ever again. Complete and utter waste of money.

I don't even want to think about how much money I blew on Don't Starve costumes
Recently it’s got to be Marshals amiibo card from eBay. Even though it works perfectly with my Switch Lite, the seller didn’t state that it wasn’t an official amiibo card. I’ll give them credit for cleverly photographing their “amiibo” to make it look like it was bigger than it actually was with the design being printed perfectly to match the official one.
Sorry you got scammed. Hey, at least it works. If it's anything, I can tell you it won't negatively affect your save file if you use it. Amiibos are keys that unlock existing data within the game. Think if it as a copy of a key. They don't actually import data. If they did, it would take much longer to scan in villagers

Thanks, I'm just bummed it wasn't an official amiibo more than anything and that I can't find Marshal's amiibo anywhere else on eBay from reputable sellers at the moment. I was hoping my usual seller would have him but alas they didn't. Oh well I'm just grateful the one I have works and I'll be more careful when buying amiibo cards from eBay in the future.

Don't remind me of Pocket Camp and stuff lmao.

Also a lot of physical/digital games for Ds and 3ds mostly cause videos doesn't show much and you want to try it.

Yeah, videos do a good job of reeling you in, and once you get the game… you’re like “wth is this?” (In a nutshell)

Indeed and most reviews doesn't really cover stuff from good aspects so yeah I'm very restrictive these days with games. Sure I'll probably get Arceus and Spla3n later on but yeah I don't like trying unknown waters these days.

Definitely clothes and shoes for me! At the store I work at I get a discount and I unfortunately have bought way too much stuff I don’t need just because it was just cheap. Or because I thought it looked cute only to never wear it and have it just sit in my closet and wear the same stuff all the time.

I bought an Xbox series S a couple months ago which is a purchase I kinda regret; I have a working Xbox One so I don’t know why I felt the need to upgrade to a system without a disc drive. I haven’t even played it that much since I got it, as I prefer playing games on my switch in handheld mode. I could probably sell the Series S but at the same time I know I’ll want it eventually for when the next elder scrolls comes out so idk

Me when I did work in a second hand store some years ago. Sure I do have some stuff left and since I did get discount or we just had great stuff coming in I bought a lot lol. Most I had to throw away though cause bad quality, gaining weight etc. so yeah

the mindset of people on this forum is amazing. people are posting about regretting spending money just one time on something that costs a few bucks, but you bring up a topic that's actually something to learn from and no one engages it.

thanks for sharing your experience and your insight concerning the subject. hopefully others take notice because what you said is actually an important part of life.
It's all good. I'm easily 10+ years older than most of the other members on this forum, so I know many of them won't have had any similar experiences to be able to make a meaningful response. I just throw stuff like that out there when I can and when it's pertinent to the discussion because I'm sure some will read it and if/when they are in a position to be thinking about buying their first home, maybe they'll think back on my post and act cautiously.
