I usually get my hair cut and colored by someone who knows what they are doing, but with everyone on lockdown or staying home, I have started to get pretty restless about my hair. I went so far as to buy ingredients to add highlights myself (using hair bleach and tinfoil) but I'm getting cold feet because it looks really hard to do alone. Has anyone else ever tried it, and if so, how did it come out?

I cut my own hair during the first lockdown (March-June over here) because it got way too long (I have a pixie cut with bangs). It was pretty rough, but better than having it in my eyes. We're now in lockdown again but thankfully I got it cut professionally a week before lockdown started, so hopefully I should be good until hairdressers are open again.

I'm tempted to cut bangs on myself but also scared bc I haven't had bangs in YEARS and also if it doesn't look good, I don't really know any stylists to go to to make it look good.

As for coloring, I asked a couple of my friends (I only have a bit of coloring but I'm scared to do it at home haha. debating it tho! I kinda want some balayage, I only have streaks.) and they recommended this video:

I was just watching one of his videos, haha! I would love balayage at some point, I love the way it looks. I was also thinking it would be cool to have bangs; I haven't had them in so long. But that is something I will need to wait for a pro to do since I am certain I would mess that up!

Go for it! I shaved my head at the start of lockdown, bleached it several times throughout, and now have a bright blue mohawk. It's been the perfect time to experiment with new looks.

Remember that if it doesn't turn out well you can always try something else.

Very true. And I have seen some of your hairstyles on another thread, they all look very cool!

I didn’t do this, but my boss at work who was a brunette went platinum blond during quarantine. She said she had to do it because her grays were growing out so much and she couldn’t go to her stylist often, so she decided to go completed toward the other end of the color spectrum to hide her grays (that way when the roots grow out, they blend in). I thought it was both clever and super cool. She actually have said that she wanted to try blonde for a while, but our workplace is pretty conservative so normally she’d never feel comfortable doing this. But with quarantine, we are all working from home, so nobody cared if you now have white/red/blue/green hair as you don’t interact with people much now besides the occasional video conferencing calls.

I always dye & bleach my own hair and sometimes the outcome is not what you expected. My hair gets quite brassy so toner is needed afterwards. I bleached my hair many times during quarantine cause I had long roots & then dyed my whole head blue. As for doing your own highlights, I'd say start small and don't make the highlights too thick. I'd watch a youtube tutorial if you're doing it alone and make sure to put your hair into sections or else you might miss a chunk of hair. Also don't mix all your bleach at once cause you'll be going slow and the bleach will loose it's strength by the time you get to the second half of your head.

i tried blunt bangs and i did not like it at all :( it looked weird without a middle part and my hair just did not want to middle part! i would like to try more stuff like short hair but i would be scared my hair wouldn't grow back to how it looks now....... maybe one day i will become more experimental with my hair. i wanna make it unique in some way!

I usually have my hair cut every month so it's usually pretty short but now I've allowed it to grow longer than I've ever grown my hair before and I'll see how it looks when it gets even longer and maybe can style it if my hair isn't cut again anytime soon.

I've been trimming my own bangs for a long time. Back in college I would go get my haircuts at various hairstyling schools where it was cheaper and the students needed models =) So I listened to what the teachers were teaching them and started doing at least that part myself because you can see that well! I don't know if I could pull off cutting the rest and making it all even all the way around the back though... But thank goodness for long female hair that I can just grow out!
But I would say if you do try and do bangs, just cut it a longer than you want first, that way you can trim it shorter if you like. (or pin it up/back if you don't like it!)

I don't know if I'm bold enough to bleach and dye my hair, having never done it before. Also I work in such a conservative profession and I have fellowship interviews coming up in a few months... My brother said he did it in college, but guys' hair is short and grows back so quickly! I think for him the bleaching went fine, but then the blue hair dye he bought either wasn't as bright as he wanted, or it maybe just didn't last as long as he wanted or turned other strange colors too quickly and he didn't want to maintain it. But I did buy some Overtone coloring conditioner at the beginning of the lockdown (March for us), but I learned that my Asian hair is too dark for the color to show up well without bleaching first, alas.

I've been experimenting a bit by letting my bang grow out in the front. With how dark my hair has gotten, I'm considering dyeing it to the light shade of brown I had as a kid.

I've killed my hair over quarantine :'P I cut bangs, dyed my hair multiple times with awful box dye and bleached it. I'm even contemplating shaving my head altogether lmao. If you're thinking of doing something to your hair, just do it. You might love it. It's only hair :]

I didn’t personally do it, but I cut my moms hair right at the start of quarantine. I felt like a professional hair cutter. I watched a couple of hair videos on YouTube, and I don’t think it turned out too bad. Wasn’t exactly the cut we were trying to go for, but it didn’t come out too bad. My mom was ok with it 🤣

i did and it went absolutely awful, i'm lucky because there was a brief period of time where hairdressers opened in our area and my hairdresser managed to save it but i am never trying to do my own hair again. not trying to be rude because i'm sure there are people out there who can do it themselves but i think professionally done hair looks so much better than i could ever try and do it, there's definitely a reason people go and get it done and don't rely on box dye

also, quick note but this probably did months worth of damage to my hair, so while it's a good time to experiment pls try use temporary dyes and not bleach it too much as that is so awful for ur hair and can ruin the texture/quality forever or at least a long time

I wouldn’t dare fix my hair myself because I just don’t trust myself to make it look good. Even when I had a shaved head I would make my room mate touch up the back for me in case I missed spots. Now I’ve had short permed curly/wavy hair for a few years and I would get it touched up/trimmed every month and permed twice a year. I can’t do any of that myself at home but I also don’t mind letting it grow out a bit because my current hair works fine with a hat during my “awkward length stage”. My country has been pretty diligent with COVID restrictions (we’ve only had around 300+ cases) but we had a community outbreak scare recently and I don’t feel comfortable going out even if businesses here take precautions. So I’ll just sport messy hair and my usual bucket hat for a while 😂

I havent tried any drastic hairstyles during lockdown other than shaving an undercut into my hair. I've always had the opinion though that whenever I dye it or cut it if it goes wrong it will grow back or can dye it again. I'm all for trying new things with it, I wont ever bleach my hair again though as I ended up cutting it all off after it became so brittle. I have always been tempted to shave it all off but I havent done it yet 😂

I’ve always cut my own hair, to be honest, so that isn’t anything new to me, but I cut my hair shorter than I’ve ever had it recently, and I almost immediately decided it wasn’t for me and have just been trying to make the most of it until it grows back. But on the bright side, my fringe is now growing at the same rate as the rest of my hair, so by the time my hair is back to the length it was, I may have grown out my fringe!

In general I haven’t done anything crazy in lockdown with my hair, though.

never dyed my hair on anyone else's, but considering that so many of my friends have done it themselves i could not recommend it because to this day their hair is still fried and damaged. they try fixing it by coloring it even more, but that just makes it worse LOL feels and looks like straw at this point. but honestly dying hair professionally seems too expensive, so i say do it yourself and hope for the best. if it doesn't work out just shave it off! i shaved my hair off at the beginning of quarantine and it felt so liberating, especially during the summer! am considering it again, but i don't want my bald head to freeze LOL
