I'm loving the idea of having 8 players on one island to hang out with, it will make it sooooo much more enjoyable  However, I'm a bit nervous about the issue surrounding nintendo's online multiplayer and that potentially affecting New Horizons, will it be super laggy like Super Mario Maker 2 and other games that have a hard time with people playing online? It would really ruin the fun of online multiplayer for New Horizons, fingers crossed it doesn't.

I don't think anybody can really answer your question yet. But I doubt the online multiplayer will be very different from other Switch games, honestly.

Unfortunately, we will have to check if the guest/villager has a good internet connection before doing a multiplayer game with them because I notice on SMM2 that not every party was lagging. I am really worried about that as well because I gave up SMM2 multiplayer because of the lagging (it was horrible and almost, all the time the game is laggy).

yeah, mario maker 2 is pretty crap. but don't games like mario kart 8 and splatoon 2 run peer-to-peer too? from what I've heard the
online on those games isn't so bad so maybe animal crossing will also have acceptable online play

it's always joyous to wonder whether the service you are paying for will work acceptably

I think it’s too early to tell. Maybe the Switch Lite foxes some of those lagging issues? They still will have to patch the regular switch though

hmm, this is an interesting point and valid concern. I wouldn't be too worried at this stage, we'll just have to wait and see I guess. Fingers crossed that lagging won't be an issue although it may vary from person to person and depend on how strong your internet is. Had no idea mario maker 2 was laggy! That really sucks, looks like such a great game.

Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart ain’t bad for online from my experience. Can’t speak for others but it should be ok I think if it’s anything like those two. It depends on the players NAT type really. I had to futz with my firewall to make my switch compatible for online play, it was a nightmare lol. 8 players in one island does seem like a lot though. It’s ok if they’re all friends but for trades I’ll probably be sticking to small visits. Otherwise I’m gonna have to set up some island voice chat lmao :’D

I'm a little concerned on this too, but it's much too early to know, as they haven't given much information out yet. We'll just have to see whether or not if it's good or bad. When I was playing Splatoon 2 at the time, I didn't have too much trouble with the online multiplayer, but of course, that was just my experience.

I just hope people can travel to another town in groups now. Ending an online session with 6 people in your town to head over to a friend’s town and dealing with the “yada yada has arrived” cutscene for 6 players, not to mention the lag that might occur, will get exhausting.

I hope they incorporate the mechanic used to travel to Island Tours in NL. Everyone takes a seat and the host sets up the ride to the next town, and there’ll be just a “party of 6 from yada yada has arrived” cutscene.

yeah, the idea of 8 players in online multiplayer sounds super cool! however nintendo is sort of notorious for having funky internet issues, even when online is locked behind a paywall now.

games like splatoon 2 and mario maker are nightmares to play with laggy players, to the extent that some professional players in splatoon would not practice with people who don't have a lan adapter for their router, as without it, there's no guarantee that someone's internet will always be perfectly lag-free, and will occasionally disconnect. this is even worse in mario maker, as it's a platformer - platformers with lag are never fun.

even in new lead, there have been instances of lag that i've seen :( it doesn't affect me too much, and it isn't TOO much of a problem (usually there's a delay when picking up items, traveling to different areas, or speaking with villagers), but that's only with 4 players. i'm curious how it'll be with 8!
