Hi everyone!

Recently I have found myself thinking more and more about piercings, specifically an industrial piercing. I love the way they look. I’m strongly considering getting one done when I go to college. Below I have a few questions because I’m not super knowledgeable about piercings (I only have one in each earlobe right now). I’d love to hear from people who have or used to have one!

1) On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being unbearable, how bad was the pain for you?

2) What was the healing/maintenance for it like?

3) How much did it cost?

4) For people who used to have one: Do the holes close up completely if the bar is taken out? If so, how long does that take?

If you have any other relevant advice or insight about industrial piercings that doesn’t necessarily pertain to my questions, I would still appreciate it very much.

1) I went into shock so I didn't even feel the second hole being pierced - so pain-wise I didn't feel a thing haha. I've been pierced over twenty times and that is the only time that's happened. Most piercings are pretty much the same: a sharp pain for about 30 seconds, some pain but not quite as bad for another couple of minutes, and then they feel okay. Short-term suffering for long-term joy.

2) An industrial typically takes 3-6 months to heal. I just sprayed it with saline solution from a squirt bottle twice a day. The most irritating part is not being able to sleep on that side for a while otherwise irritation bumps will form.

3) I can't remember the exact price I paid. It would've been somewhere between £10-20. Prices can vary drastically for piercings.

4) An industrial piercing goes through cartilage, so it will close quite quickly once removed. I had two helix piercings in my other ear for a couple of years. They closed over within a couple of days of removing them.

I really really wanted an industrial when I was about your age, but like you the only other piercings I had were in my earlobes. I decided to just get a regular helix to start out, and I'm glad I did, because I wound up taking it out just a couple years later. I know I would've been really disappointed if I had gotten the industrial only to wind up taking it out. I think it's helpful to keep in mind that piercings are different for everyone and not to get discouraged if it doesn't work out for you.

Not going to pretend to know anything about piercings and actually clicked this by accident, but upon being here I'd like to point out for pain you can use EMLA for piercings if you think pain is going to be an issue. Apply the cream to some sort of dressing let it soak for 1-2 hours wipe the cream off when you get there. You can get it without a prescription here at least, but I imagine it's going to vary from place to place. If getting EMLA cream is an issue you can simply use a Lidocaine cream instead however it is going to be less effective than the hospital grade stuff.

Twenty piercings? Wow!! Thanks for sharing your experience :)

I agree! It’s all about experimentation for me. If the piercing ends up not working out, it’s no big deal. I just want to try it because it looks appealing to me right now. I still have a whole year until I go to college, so if I still want the piercing then as badly as I do now, I think I’ll do it.

I’m not too concerned about pain, but thanks for telling me that! I think I’d rather experience it fully. I have a fear of needles and I want to face that if I do decide to get this piercing.

Okay so I don’t have an industrial but I do have a conch punch (think conch piercing but with a hole punch). And it really didn‘t hurt that bad. Like of course piercings hurt, but it’s not unbearable and it isn’t like a persistent pain, it pretty much goes away once the needle is through and you won’t feel too much pain afterwards.

HOWEVER, the healing process is where you are going to experience the most pain, especially if you accidentally bump the piercing/get it caught on clothes or hair/accidentally sleep on it/etc. so its REALLY important to follow the aftercare procedures, keep it clean and refrain from touching it. it took over a year for my conch punch to heal and now it’s totally fine, but man it could get really painful at times that first year. So just know that once you get it pierced, you are in it for the long haul until that thing is healed!

I can’t speak on the cost of an industrial, but my conch punch cost me around $80 usd with tip, so I would imagine an industrial would cost around that or maybe less.

As for the holes closing up, I’ve had multiple cartilage piercings and they have all closed, however one did leave a tiny scar on the back of my ear. It’s important to note that I only had them for a couple years, the likelihood of a piercing hole closing I think depends a lot on how long you’ve had it.

If it’s something you want you should totally go for it! Best of luck!!!

i have an industrial and i adore it, it's my favorite piercing and i'm really glad i got it. to answer your questions though -
1. probably about an 8. i have a high pain tolerance, but it was...rough. mine was done more diagonally than straight across the top of my ear and idk if that's normal or not?? i'm thinking maybe my ear is small so that could be why, but anyway i think that was a big part of the pain for me. the bottom part of the piercing is through an especially thick piece of cartilidge.
2. mine took about 8-12 months to fully, 100% heal. saline spray didn't work for me, so i had to use a sea salt solution i found online and soaked my ear twice a day until it finally healed. it was annoying, but worth it in the end.
3. $60 + tip
4. i've never taken mine out, but i know they close up super fast. i wouldn't recommend ever removing it unless it's for a few minutes, and make sure that's after it's fully healed.

Thank you! It’s comforting to know that cartilage piercings can close up again. For some reason I was under the impression that they couldn’t. I really think that I would keep an industrial if I got one, but it’s still nice to know that they’re not permanent just in case.

My ears are on the small side, too. I’m sorry that it was so painful for you but I‘m glad you like it!
