Seasonal items?

Hey guys! I have a quick question...

My friend is playing ACNH and is catching up to the current date (IE--she's traveling backwards not forwards; she's on 1/1/2021 right now) and can't see the beginning of the year seasonal items like I can. I thought TT penalties were only if going forward in time?

Has she checked for any game updates ?

perhaps you have to synchronise the clock via the internet to unlock the items? as they're time locked it would make sense to need to be connected to the internet, otherwise you would be able to go back and order previous seasonal items

So could she sync the clock then set it back to the first to catch up (all without opening the game after syncing)?
