Just started playing end of July

Last two days I've encountered multiple tarantulas, but they either pop up when I don't have my net handy (edit to clarify: in my hand instead of pocket) and scurry offscreen before I can get ready from a safe distance, or else ambush me behind a tree while I walk with the net out, so 0 chance to approach properly. No luck with tarantula mystery island either. Spent my entire day off time-traveling to extend the catch window. Any tips on how to snag one that won't involve making my island barren like I did to my town in New Leaf?

(The scorpions weren't nearly this problematic 😠)

Honestly, a good alternative is to stock up on a decent amount of NMTs (self-obtained or purchased -- up to you) and just keep up the search for a Tarantula island after 7PM. Its a 2% chance per ticket, so just keep at it.

You said that they appear when you don’t have a net around. A solution would be to keep a net (or a few) in your pockets at all times so that you don’t forget.

Maybe set a reminder to start each playthrough with a net already in hand.

You could also set up a net/flimsy net station on multiple parts of your island. Just place the net(s) near a designated area.

Something that might help, and this applies to both tarantulas and scorpions, is that if you ready your net and slowly creep towards them, they will rear up. If you stop moving when they rear up for a second or two, they will stop rearing up. Then you can creep more towards them. Play red light-green light with them like this until you are close enough for your net to catch them.

Once I figured this out tarantulas and scorpions were much easier to catch

I heard a long time ago that they are also more likely to appear it you're actively holding your net while walking around the island, so maybe try that too?

I almost never see tarantulas anymore... I suppose it's because my island is too full. If you have the space, maybe clear a small field and pass by with a net to hopefully spot one. Entering and exiting a house will reset the spawns.

If you find them spawning on a nook island at night (which I suggest hunting them there since you can wipe the island of plants) I would dig a couple of safe havens with holes on the island that you can trap the spider in or yourself in when you run away so you can easily catch the spider without getting bit. Something like a U shape or open box shape. They don't jump over holes. I find that shape easier than a line of holes, but a line of holes works too.

I should have been clearer: they'll show up when I'm not holding the net, I still have it in my pocket

I did that with the scorpions successfully many times, the problem is with the tarantulas I keep never getting the chance
