I didn’t get why they decided to make flowers grow in stages in New Horizons, but I came up with a theory:

Flowers will not wilt in New Horizons. The beautiful ordinance was a welcomed quality of life option in New Leaf, especially for players with towns covered in flowers and not enough time to water them all.

Now that we’ll be developing a town from the ground up, who knows how long it would take before we are able to build a town hall. Building one may even be optional. I think that the developers wanted to keep the watering can in the game, but if they decide to nix wilting, it needed a new use. So now we must water the sprouts to bud, then water the buds to blossom.

Another observation that kinda supports the theory is the fact that it’s tropical island, even referred to as a paradise. Notice how there are no patches of dirt on the island, every inch of it is covered in grass. The climate is perfectly suited for lush vegetation. No opportunity for wilting.

“What about golden roses”, you ask?
What about them? They’re hideous. Jk, jk (not really :)). Maybe watering black roses with a gold watering has a chance of producing a golden hybrid.

I’m probably wrong and we’ll just have to remember to water all our flowers every day until we unlock ordinances. Or maybe ordinances can be accessed through game settings. Like the phone in Wild World, maybe the Nookphone can call the mysterious creature on the other line.

What do you think? I honestly wouldn’t care either way, I kinda miss the responsibility of keeping my flowers hydrated.

Flowers are one of my favorite parts of the game. Not so much the flowers themselves, but the potential propagation of hybrids. Purple hybrids are the best, but honestly, I get equally excited finding any of the colors has sprouted in my town.

As long as the chance for hybrids still exists, they can do whatever they want with the flower system.

I’m sure cross breeding will return. I also enjoy making hybrids, it’d be a shame if they took them out or just let you buy them at the store.

If it weren't for flowers wilting, I definitely would have chosen a different ordinance, so your theory would be a welcomed change for me! We're not really mayors in this game so there's no more need for ordinances. Even flowers in the wild don't need watering and thrive off natural rainfall. With a bigger map and more areas to water to maintain our flowers, your theory actually be correct! I'm with tajikey too. They will probably keep the "watering same species flowers nearby to make hybrids" aspect again, so I'm fine with it either way as long as they give us an option (either in a form or ordinance or something else) for flowers not to wilt if they still have that mechanic.

I absolutely do not want to water flowers. Especially in stages.

I would rather have none, and wait for an ordinance or something that makes them not wilt.

This would be a massive step backwards if we have to go back to the daily watering.

There has to be time for real life.

At least when watering them in stages, once they’ve blossomed you won’t have to water them again :D Well, if my theory is correct, and if you don’t pick the pistils to craft a garland.
I’d rather water them in stages than have to water them daily so they won’t wilt.

Yeah, that makes sense.
Growing hybrids could be a lot of work though. :(
I hope your theory is right, actually.

Whatever ends with me not having to water flowers every day. :D

The different stages of flower growth also just makes more sense in terms of logic, but if your theory holds true, I think it would be a welcome addition to the series.

Though, I will admit having to wait for flowers to fully bloom before I can go for hybrids is mildly annoying, unless its only a day or so.

Really hope your theory is right! I hated how flowers worked in New Leaf because it meant I had to check on them every day or they'd wilt and die. Not to mention being unable to try out other ordinances because changing the ordinance from Beautiful Town meant I would have to go around and water flowers every day. I hope they make it so that the only thing watering does is make your flowers sparkle and increases your chances of breeding hybrids, not because they need watering to stay alive.

tbh i feel like this is a very realistic theory, considering we havent seen grass deterioration at all in any of the videos or pictures released. a weird connection to make, but if the grass seemingly cannot wilt, why would the flowers? :p

This is brilliant. This is exactly what they need to do.

Tbh sometimes the game felt like a chore that I was obligated to check on my town every day to water flowers until the ordinance was available in NL. I love this balance you suggested.

I like this theory! If it's not true then I hope we can build like, sprinklers or something that automatically water our flowers! But that's just wishful thinking on my part ;w;

I love the flowers in the game and happy when a surprise hybrid blooms overnight in NL...but I really hate daily watering. Just the idea of it stresses me out. I hope there is some kind of ordinance style beautiful town setting. Even with the gold watering can, watering is such a time suck when there are Whale Sharks to catch!

Although it's not a real game, flowers in Pocket Camp don't wilt, and they introduced a new use for the watering can. I can absolutely see watering flowers staying a feature, but instead of punishing you for not watering, you get rewarded for the times you do water them. Could be a nook miles thing

From what I?ve seen in the first trailer, it looks like flowers will take 3 days to fully blossom.

I can definitely see flowers growing after x days, but grow faster if you water them daily -- personally watered or by weather. Definitely would add a sense of realism.

Same here.
It would be a chore again if we had to water every day.

Good theory! I'm actually in agreement with it. The flowers in this game do grow differently than in the previous games. I'm sure we will still be able to grow hybrids too by watering them as well. I didn't mind having to water all my flowers, but not having to anymore sounds really nice.
