The Garden of Hesperides

In Greek mythology, the Hesperides are the nymphs of evening and golden light of sunsets, who were the "Daughters of the Evening" or "Nymphs of the West". They were also called the Atlantides from their reputed father, the Titan Atlas. Hesperos, or Vesper in Latin, is the origin of the name Hesperus, the evening star (i.e. the planet Venus) as well as having a shared root with the English word "west". source

The Garden of the Hesperides is famous for its golden apples, a wedding gift from Gaia to Hera; in some myths these bestow the gift of immortality, in some tellings the source of Eris' Apple of Discord, and in others, the apples of joy that tempted Atalanta astray from her race. Some also believe "golden apples" could mean oranges--hence the Greek botanical name for citruses, Hesperidoeidē.

Dierdre has been on my island for fewer than 24 hours and already picked up Phoebe's catchphrase. Birds of a feather flock together, I suppose...

Accidentally moved Bones' house to the wrong place by, like, 2 spots off (thx controller drift), so it'll be another three days before it's corrected--but I won't have to worry about that happening again! My new left JoyCon came in, and it should be good for a while. Made catching stars in Hyrule so much easier~

Snagged lilies as well today, to round out my flower collection completely.

I already kinda hate what I did with the museum yesterday. 2 waterfall grottoes/valleys is too much, and the picnic spot is so much prettier. Be moving that soon too, I suppose.

Had a good turnip day today, with the Nooklings buying them for 433/turnip! I hadn't bought many since Mae was selling for 104 bells, but it still came out nice--especially with Flick visiting to buy my hoard of tarantulas. Note: have not yet paid off the loan.

Skye, you're one of the only people in this game who owns a couch, SIT ON IT.

Lots of hybrids this morning! Purple hyacinths, my first purple rose, an orange rose... Gardening is coming along pretty nicely. Still not sure where I want to be with the museum.

We were sorry to see Phoebe, one of my starting villagers, go, but she was fortunate to be adopted by the wonderful @Csatrolyn ! Who was generous and lovely enough to leave me a golden rose <3

It immediately got planted in a garden at the heart of a hedge maze on the western edge of the island. You know...Hesperides? Thematic? There, oranges and apples--the two fruits relevant to the myths of the Garden--abound.

I put AO3 on my laptop, so the rep can read all those juicy Nook/Redd bitter-exes fics

Got the cloudy wallpaper and the starry sky wall for my "Mechanisms of Heaven" zodiac room. I sure do wish I could have a frickin' meteor shower....I need ONE MORE Taurus fragment :c

The museum sits at the edge of a forest to the north. And in the heart of that forest...

Why is the sky/lighting at 5am so gorgeous? I'm never going to be up to see it outside of pandemic-related insomnia :c Song is pretty good too.

I got Julian's photo as my first villager photo today by giving him a gold rose crown (which he seems to love, he's taken it off and put it back on with changing clothes, here's hoping it stays)! So I held a commemorative photoshoot. How fitting. And the crown looks great on him, clearly.
