Well when I was browsing youtube first thing this morning I came across a scary live action version of detective pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds and a trailer to accompany that terrifying image.

In my opinion it looks like Hollywood hasn't learnt that games cant be adapted to the big screen via live action and I see this as a few things. It'll probably make swimming pools of money for Nintendo and Pokemon via marketing etc., but I think it be a pretty average if not bad movie overall. It looks very 'adult' compared to what pokemon actually is and I'm concerned how its tone will play out in the movie.

I'm probably not going to see this at launch but am curious to know what everyone else's perception of this is, as I was quite terrified when I saw it and my brain face palmed.

The Charizard looked like nightmare fuel, that's for sure. I'll probably see it eventually, but I have no idea why a live-action Pokemon movie was needed.

Yeah it's a bit out of the blue, if anything the pokemon shouldve been like their animated counterparts (thinking space jam) or at the very least toned down to be more cartoonish (I.e. a less fuzzy Pikachu).

When has a movie ever been needed?

It looks decent IMO but I don't understand the fuzziness of the pokemon.

Detective Pikachu was a mediocre game at most. I don't see why they need a movie other than bombarding kids (and their parents' wallets) with Pikachu plushes with small differences from one another, which Nintendo does anyway. I think this age of video game movies (Mario, Sonic, Pok?mon) will be one that their respective companies will try to cover up.

Yeah, I don’t see why they need a movie for this game, much less a live-action movie for it. Just doesn’t make sense to me.

I tried playing Detective Pikachu (the game). I got the demo and couldn't stand Pikachu's voice. It wasn't right for me to play a game with that deep voice. I'm not going to see the movie since I won't enjoy the voices

Pikachu is sooooo cute looking, but the voice is so insanely unfitting..
I don't really think the movie is needed, the series was good enough.
The trailer was actualle pretty funny and all, but I feel like it's too.. forced?
Like, forced jokes and cuteness, I dunno..

But oh well, I will probably still watch it, once it's on DVD or so,
just to get a better opinion about it.

How I view any live action adaptation, it is unnecessary unless it adds something worth watching compared to the original content. Just before this thread, my partner was telling me how uncanny it looked haha. I don't really understand the casting choice for Ryan Reynolds too. Yes, the guy's funny, but it's a very odd role character-wise. I suppose I'd understand more if it was more comedy oriented?

The casting choice for him is beyond me... I cant get out of my mind the thought that deadpool has possessed Pikachu D:

The movie just seems too teen like and less for children. As I said in my earlier post the tone of this movie confuses me...

I never watched Deadpool, but I will forever associate Ryan Reynolds with the Green Lantern movie that came out back in 2011 that just wasn't that good. Is there any way that this move could be good, honestly?

I think if they want to try making a Pok?mon aimed at older audiences, they should stick to anime. I haven't played Detective Pikachu so I don't know what happens in that game, but hearing a Pikachu talk is just weird... The thing about live action is that compared to animation, it is both restrictive and very expensive. If you do not have a good reason to make it live action, then you should consider why you are doing it to begin with.

Perhaps this movie will be good. I don't wish for a bad movie. That being said, my expectations are extremely low.

I guess I'm the only one looking forward to it! XD

I'm feeling kinda iffy about it :c
I love Ryan Reynolds (so much), and I love Pokemon (so much), but him being Pikachu's voice feels off. Also Pikachu has pupils, and most of the Pokemon look like wet stuffed animals ;-;

But who knows, it could be interesting!

Also a good point c:

The only attachment I have to the Pok?mon series is the mainline series of the video games, like Black & White, Alpha Sapphire, Moon, etc. I've never bothered to touch any of the sidegames, and that includes Detective Pikachu. I also haven't watched the anime since around the Johto days. I said all this to get to my main point, if it isn't a main series video game, anything else Pok?mon is pretty uninteresting to me. So, I have no interest in watching this movie. The most enjoyment I am getting and will get out of it is seeing the somewhat humorous reactions of disgust to the models they're using for the Pok?mon. This overall just seems like an enormous misfire.

I just watched the trailer and I laughed multiple times. I can tell it's gonna be absolutely hilarious, especially with Deadpool voicing Pikachu. I played through the entire game and loved it, so I'm super hyped. :D

I'm watching it with my partner once it's in theatres. It seems like a (mostly) lighthearted movie. :)
