The squid

I don't have a problem with it. They've been making fish, art, etc look quite realistic for a while. They do even in New Leaf.

That's how squids look IRL though.

yeah but animal crossing could deuglify it, i'm ugly irl too but my animal crossing character is cute

I thought it looked super cool! I think the added detail makes it so all the fish and bugs don't blend together. I don't think it's too realistic yet just realistic enough :)

I think my issue is just it didn't blend into the world (texture wise. Even with the "realistic" style of the bugs and stuff in New Leaf, they still looked like they were a part of the world and not something that didn't belong in their universe. Like I want it to be designed accurately, but not textured too realistically. If that makes sense. Or maybe it's something I'll get used to eventually. At this point, maybe I'm just used to the squid in New Leaf, and that's probably why it looks off to me.

It's ugly! Its a weird gray and it clashes very strangely with the rest of the game. For some reason I think the other fish will look better though. Like? it might just be ugly because it's a squid :p

Actually feels really good to see so many people agree that the design seemed a bit off!
It’s such a minor thing that I just assumed nobody else would have an opinion on it. haha

It didn't bother me. Fish have always looked fairly realistic in Animal Crossing (except maybe the pixelated Gamecube fish), so these are just a result of better graphics.

Okay so here's a comparison. Warning, these are ugly as HECK omfricking

They don't look that far off. I wanted to compare the sea bass but I couldn't find a green one.

Seeing the major improvement on the graphics already, they wanted to go with the trend and make the rest more realistic looking. I'm fine with it, as long as they don't go too overboard with the bugs. We don't wanna see every small detail of a creepy bug tbh.

Looks about normal to me. A good amount of the fish and bugs in Animal Crossing have always retained a bit more realistic graphics than other areas of the game.

I mean the museum stuff has always had a level of realism to it, only really held down by graphical/technical limitations

have we been playing the same franchise for nearly the past 2 decades??

You're right, they've always matched up to their real life counterpart. But it blended into the world really well in New Leaf (the only game in the series I've played). Here's the squid in ACNL:

It looks like a part of the world.

Here's the ACNH squid:

To me, it looks photoshopped in. You know how in some hand drawn anime or cartoons, they'll incorporate some CGI? That's what it feels like to me. Two different contrasting styles. The world and villagers are not super textured and have a very simplistic cute design. Meanwhile they upped the detail on the squid so it just doesn't meld together. This is just my opinion.

Like I said, I could still get used to it and end up loving it. But this was just the first thought I had in my mind when I first saw the squid. And it seems like I'm in the minority anyway. Not like this would ruin the game for me. I'm still super excited for it. Just wanted to see if I was alone in thinking this.

honestly, the older squids feel more like a mario reference to me than anything. so now they're simply matching it up to be even closer to its actual real world counterpart, like all the other museum species

I actually think it's really cool, especially since they usually supply little facts about the critters, so you can learn a bit about them. Making them more cartoonish would take away from that, in my opinion.

I thought it looked cool.
It makes me really interested in what other existing creatures look like now.

I was expecting the squid to be more white like the previous versions (and maybe this is me being negative, but something is nagging at me that they haven’t added new bugs/fish and deep sea creatures for this, hoping to be proven wrong, though.)

I'm sure they have! They added a Manila clam. I'm sure they just didn't want to show off all the new stuff they added. They didn't even show new villagers but I'm sure they've added some. I actually really want it to be a surprise ^_^ I just want to see more game mechanics and how things will work, but I don't want to be spoiled for all the new added things. I want to discover that for myself! So don't worry, I'm sure Nontendo just wants to leave some surprises.

i actually really liked the squid, it was very smooth looking

the butterflies also fly more realistic but they look wack when flying(which hopefully should be better when the game releases)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this! They flap so weirdly.

I thought the design looked pretty great! I don't mind the realistic look at all. Makes the game more interesting. :)
