The Villagers Dialogue is still an issue that really needs to be Addressed.

Okay by now I know that most people already heard what every villager has said up until this point since we played the game since day one. The villagers I hate to say this but they all are so boring. They only talk about themselves based on their personality. I spoke to my friend about this and we both agreed that the villagers and their dialogue is just so boring. Its no wonder why most people find it so hard to connect with them because of the repetitive dialogue. They always talk about your friend visiting, about the items on the island, asking you what your (user) hobbies are, asking you if you been to any villager homes, commenting about your clothing, and of course the most repetitive one always talking about themselves based on their personality like Jocks talking nothing but their muscles and workouts for example.

All I'm saying is that the dialogue needs to be improved because if there is one thing that I don't see anyone talking about is the villager dialogue. If Nintendo can bring back certain hairstyles then I say they need to add new villager dialogue options that the old AC games had. Do any of you find it hard to connect with your villagers?

i absolutely agree. the weakest point of NH is the dialogue. it just has none of the flavor and character that the older games had. i really wish nintendo would add more engaging dialogue, i don't understand why they dumbed down the game so much and stripped it of its personality. i love the new creative elements, but i really miss the personality of WW!

I also agree. I feel like the dialogue just fell through the cracks during development. I know there are a lot of villagers but I feel like you’re really only making dialogue for the villager types not each individually. They just repeat the same three things and I want to talk to them but I end up just pushing b through it all because it’s so repetitive

I agree. I was talking to a villager one day, trying to get to their interesting dialogue but then I talked to them too many times and they wanted to be left alone.

I do like that they have some cute random things they say about specific items if you talk to them near the items. But there's not really enough of that.

Dobbie told me today, like he did yesterday and three times the day before - that he was worried that he’d left his stove on at home...
Wolfgang must have been tuned into Dobbies anxious energy because he was also worried that he’d left his stove on at home! At least Wolfgang has a stove to worry about I suppose 😅

The dialogue in this game is pretty awful to be honest.

I do wish the villagers had more depth. It’s no fun talking to them if they get annoyed by your presence before you get interesting dialogue!

That being said, I really don’t want villager snippiness to come back. It’s no fun having to take (minor, admittedly) verbal abuse from your “friends” either... I don’t get why so many people put that aspect on a pedestal.

I've only played NH and NL and to me, both are the same dialogue-wise. I strongly feel like the dialogue in NL was not superior to NH, despite it being glorified online. From what I remember it got just as repetitive and annoying to the point where I honestly stopped talking to my villagers (and played the game for the design aspect only). Now in NH, I am appreciating the new dialogue lines in each update, though few, it really does make a difference.

That being said, I also think it would be awesome if dialogue/villager interaction was greatly improved and I could definitely see myself talking to villagers more if so.

I also agree. Although I've never played the old games and have only seen videos and screenshots online, this was always something I was glad never made it into the new games. I can't imagine buying a 200,000+ bell piano only to have it stolen from me by my "friend" on my way home. Or having my dreamy I am trying to befriend call me fat and ugly. However, I think this snippiness would be ok only if it came on as a result of the player provoking villager first (like hitting with net, gifting trash, etc). But on its own I would also not want this to return.

Same here. I kinda started Gamecube Animal Crossing a few weeks ago, since there is so much less to do in New Horizons nowadays except collecting holiday items. The first day I got on to the GCB, I got forced on me a bunch of amazing villagers (I got Dobie and Tabby and a few older animals that they have discontinued), and I was told that I had an awful sense of style by the snooty. Immediately after, my Lazy told me that he wanted more girl neighbors.

Then, I met Pelly, Copper, and Booker, Pete, and Chip etc. -each of them has his/her own charm. I'd die for Booker. He's so dumb and cute. The events are also more relaxed and fun. The fishing tourneys felt less mindless. There is so much more flavor and charm in this game, which has made me overlook extremely ugly pixels.

What made Animal Crossing charming is really the interactions with the animals, and the feeling of belonging to a community. By overlooking that, New Horizons has made a very pretty game, but it really feels lacking sometimes.

I'd really recommend people to play the GCB version or Wild World. I am playing the GCB version with an emulator right now.

I don’t know but I’ve had a lot of new dialogue ever since the halloween update, not just those related to the event and I’ve also been playing this game since release day. I noticed it’s mostly from the villagers that I’m best friends with and I do talk to them multiple times a day.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve never had an issue with this? I’m someone who has 4 lazy’s (Cube, Stitches, Erik and Beau) and sure they sometimes say the same thing as the last person, but I usually don’t question it.

I played new leaf (even the Wii and ds lite version) and the dialogue didn’t bother me in either of those games either.

Plus I’ve started to see my villagers talk about other things, like toy day, pathing and events. Even Isabelle’s announcements seem different at times.

Maybe I’m not as invested into what my villagers say 😅

I kind of agree that the villager dialogue can get a little stale sometimes, particularly when my villagers talk about how many fossils I dug up the day before. That line specifically always annoys me, because I legit do not do anything more than dig up the 4 fossils that spawn every single day lol.

Also, not to be rude whatsoever or dunk on you or anything, but I see people talk about villager dialogue very often on this forum. It's brought up frequently in places like rant threads. Just because you don't see anyone talking about it, doesn't mean it's not being talked about.

Agreed unfortunately. Don't get me wrong I love my villagers but I've resorted to coming up with my own stories for them as they interact.
I also miss home visits but it seems that might be returning eventually!

While I would love further character development and more dialogue, we have to realize that animal crossing was never a series known for its characters with deep fleshed out backgrounds and huge variety of dialogue. It would simply be unrealistic to give all 300+ characters more personality and variety. That's something that you need to seek out in other game series.

I mean as a total bookworm, I have every bit of appreciation for interesting and varied character traits. Animal crossing is just not the series to go to for that. The charm of this series is more in it's gameplay and daily activities.

ACWW had my absolute favourite dialogue
Sassy, rude, but the right kind of level to not make young me offended. It was the perfect balance. Plus, part of the goal was to get the ruder villagers to warm up to you which was always such a rewarding feeling. The cranky villagers were almost exactly like Shane from Stardew Valley.

ACGC dialogue is a bit much tbh, in this day ACGC dialogue would not go down well
I like it but realistically AC is not about being called fat or stupid or a waste of space anymore. AC should be an escape from that.

I do agree that NL and NH dialogue is weak. I still talk to my villagers and get an occasional laugh but they aren't really that interesting except for the very occasional new funny dialogue I see. It seems less common in NH and NL compared to GC and WW.

Well I'm just saying why isn't it Nintendo is not listening? I mean they did listen to bring back hair styles yet for whatever reason they don't seem too bothered about improving the dialogue.

I'm personally not sure it's something that Nintendo will ever see as a big enough of a problem to remedy. I 100% agree with @Mairen and couldn't describe it any better, in that Nintendo probably didn't intend for Animal Crossing to ever be a dialogue-rich game with heavy world-building and expansive dialogue, unfortunately. I think with AC, we trade versatility in villager design for that of villager personality--it's like a trade off, instead of there being like less than 50 characters with unique personalities, there are 400+ different characters but with bland-ish personalities chosen from a certain set. (Sorry if I'm rambling lol)

But you have to remember the original Animal Crossing had so much more dialogue to them thats what everyone loves about the villagers how they were so memorable and it felt like actual conversations you would have with friends and family. Here in New Horizons almost all the dialogue is just copy and paste of every conservation no matter what villager you get based on whatever personality they will all talk the same thing.

Whats the point of having 400 villagers if you're only going to get them just for looks and they don't say anything different. This is a thing that has bothered me about this game. Even my friend told me she cannot stand the villagers hence the reason why she got rid of them and tried to have diverse personality but sometimes its still repetitive.

I've been saying this since day one of playing, they thankfully do get better the more you talk with them but it just isn't as good as it could be... And I miss playing hide and seek with them like we did in NL!! And visiting each others houses T.T

Yeah it definitely is an issue. I mean some dialogue is "today is fun". Like really? That's the best you can come up with nintendo?
If they really couldn't do better than that, why not mix in some interesting dialogue from previous games? They could just copy/paste but they couldn't even do that..
