Things to Look Out For When Deciding on a Map/Town?

Hi All,

I plan on resetting the game for an optimal map. What are some things I should be focusing on / things to look out for? For example, what are things that can not be changed.

For New Leaf, some things were grass patterns, native fruit, layout of the river, placement of the town hall/tree, etc. amongst many others.

Thanks!

Look for an island assuming that Resident Services can't be relocated, and that you're happy with the river entrance points of your island as you cannot change those either.

The river outlets where they pour into the ocean can’t be changed.

I don’t think resident services or the airport can be moved.

The big black rocks on the beach are permanent too I believe.

It seems like we can't change the beach, river outlets, the large coastal rocks, airport color or location, resident services location, and of course things like fruit and grass

there might be more that I can't think of right now..

I think I'll live with whatever I get for rock formations and RS location. I'll just be looking for a map with good river outlets. The rest of the river should in theory be 100% customizable. Take this for a clean template. This is theoretically possible. Once you have this, build the rivers and waterfalls how you want them.

There's a little nubbin of grass that sticks out on either the east or west beach, a private beach on the south edge, and a dock on the east or west. Basically anything on the outermost perimeter of the island can't be messed with.

As others have said, the river mouths, town fruit, airport and resident services (townhall) locations, and likely airport color cannot be changed.

If you're sentimental about first villagers, you can try to reset for one or both of them to be dream villagers. They are always uchi and jock.

i think the most important thing is the location of resident services, as it appears you won’t be able to relocate it. you might also need to watch out for the airport’s placement but i’m not too sure about that lol

On your map, look where resident services is...that's the area you are confined to for the first day. If it isn't that big, your gonna be stuck in a small part till you can cross the river.

This video covers a lot of the things most have mentioned here already, but it's explained a little more in depth/visually which is helpful !

I'm still deciding whether I want 2 south river openings or just one :\

Made a rough draft for ideas. Definitely want the river deposits both facing south and the grassy outcropping on the left closer to the beach. Dock on the right. I've heard that changing the resident services location might be possible? I'd love to have it near the beach.

Hate to be a bearer of bad news, but the north part of your map is not possible. We cannot terraform the beach rocks, beach, or ocean.

if i really don't click with the villagers i get, i might reset until i get at least one i like. other than that, i look for a map with even spacing, but i'm not too picky about it since we can mess about with it now. i'm not too bothered about airport colour or native fruit either.

At first I wanted 2 south river mouths (bc symmetry) but I realized, that's going to take up so much space where I'm really going to want to decorate and landscape. I'll be forcing myself to go with one river mouth to the side of the map.

For me personally, I think I want a south and east river exit and a central Resident Services. Idrc where the land outlet thingy is.

Part of me wants to pick the island with the biggest amount of space on the first day, but I also really want a town where rivers aren't taking up a lot of space or cutting off so small sections of land that I can't build there. I don't mind terraforming later, but I don't want to terraform a ton.

people have confirmed that you can't change the resident services location unfortunately
