One of the most jarring things to me when I was starting out was how quickly the concept of needing to prepare a home for a new villager (or islander, w/e) disappeared.
When the first 3 move in we have to gather materials and craft furniture for them prior to them moving in. At the time I thought this was the norm from then on - the plot you reserve would have the extra space in it four exterior furniture and whenever someone was moving into the plot we'd have to get stuff ready for them. After these three, though, it was super quickly discarded though and we went back to reserving small plots of land and they would just...move in?
To me, it's a huge missed opportunity - they had the feature there already and just got rid of it for an easier "just plop down a plot where they'll live" - I thought preparing the house added more to the experience and gave us something to use our gathering/crafting on before a villager moved in, and was a good way to unlock new DIY recipes that were introduced through a new villager moving in.
