Thoughts on Super Mario 3D All Stars

I preordered a physical copy. I’ve only played Galaxy before and have heard fans gush about 64 and Sunshine over the years so I look forward to playing them. I’m not a huge Mario fan or anything but I do enjoy the 3D entries in the series (the classic 2D side-scrollers were never my thing but I like the 3D games).

I also wish Galaxy 2 was included but I’m sure Nintendo has some sort of reason for not including it (even if it’s a super weird one). I also have it on Wii U virtual console so not too big of a deal for me though it would have been nice. Especially for those who don’t have it already.

i like that theyre re-releasing the games - so long over due!! a little confused as to why they didnt include galaxy2 bc i think its just as classic and enjoyable.
but also, something feels off about it idk. so like, okay, you can buy it now thru march (31st?) for 60 dollars and then you have it forever... and then what? what if some kids birthday is in, idk, june?? what if that kid never really gets to buy games that often because their family isnt well off and we're in a pandemic? to me its just like.... kind of insensitive to make it only available for half a year idk.

theyre forcing the exclusivity to drive sales and its just kinda gross to me i dunno. sorry to insert my opinions there,, i dont want to make anyone feel bad if theyre planning on purchasing. deffs do it if you want to!! my purpose isnt to guilt trip here. the consumers arent the icky ones lol.

so yeah thats why i wont be buying it ill probs just play galaxy on my wii if i want haha

I preordered it and I'm crazy excited. Never played much of 64, and never got to experience Sunshine and Galaxy firsthand, so I'm definitely gonna have my hands full :)

I wish they put more effort into improving 64/Sunshine (Especially Sunshine) Galaxy seems fine way it is but Galaxy 2 would've been a welcomed addition...

Apparently the game is plagued with performance issues, including frame skips and inverted controls that can't be readjusted in the settings menu.

The inverted controls are from the original game. That's not a change. People were probably just hoping that they would add in the ability to change it.

The frame skips are not 100% surprising either, considering it was found out today that the games are emulated, and not ports. It sounds like Super Mario Sunshine has frame skips on emulators like Dolphin too. You'd figure Nintendo would make it run better with their own emulator though.

I am pretty surprised at the amount of people complaining about the ports since this is what people have been asking for. Remasters are nice and all, but they're not necessary. The games are somewhat remastered anyways from what I've seen by having higher quality resolutions and textures. I don't want to call it a bargain, but that price is still better than the cost of getting all 3 games separately in today's market and conveniently on one system makes it more appealing.
This exactly. I love ports/remasters. It allows those who missed out originally to get them at the store price rather than depend on scalpers on Ebay or whatnot.

- Limited time release. They haven’t even explained why they’re doing this.

My guess is to build up hype in hopes people see that it's for a limited time only and rush to grab it before it's gone.

I'm so hyped y'all don't even KNOW

I've obviously played SM64 hundreds of times but Sunshine and SMG1 happen to be two of the very few games that I've never played before. so this will basically be the first time I'm getting an opportunity to play these games and I'm really excited for it!! especially since my friend has been bragging about Sunshine since the day I met him lol

the only things that bums me out is I really wish these games were actually HD remakes rather than HD ports. I personally don't care about the resolution of a game, especially because I play N64 all the time so I'm used to playing games at a low resolution. I would've loved to see updated graphics as well.

this is exactly my feelings about it too! i'm super excited for the games to be ported bc i'm sick of playing them on emulators, but i would've loved HD remakes of all three :<

I wish there was more in this package, like a gallery with concept art or nixed ideas that didn’t make it into the final game.

Not to mention full remasters with the option to play the HD emulators for nostalgia’s sake. But that’s probably asking for too much. I’d definitely would have preferred remasters though, give it the Crash Bandicoot trilogy treatment.

I'm still confident in my prediction that after this exclusivity thing is over they're gonna release the ports separately for like $30-$40 each... -_-

But yeah it's pretty snotty of them to make such an important collection limited-time

So far my experience is that SM64 has terrible controls tbh and it should be the DS version. I didn't remember those 64 controls, man.

Okay, so I finally had time to play the other two games. Never played them before. So far I'm not really a fan of either gimmick, but the game themselves are still fun. It's just fun to play Mario. This collection makes me want to play SM 64 DS lol.

it's funny cause I personally hate the DS controls way more than the N64. I never could get used to the wonky controls on the DS version lol.

Not much. I liked Sunshine, never played Galaxy and I don't like 64 lol. If they ever do a separate release for them I'd get Sunshine though lol.

My copy from Amazon says "arriving today by 8pm", but it also never shipped. So...lol. And I got an email saying the arrival date changed, but not noting a new date. So...lol again. I guess I'll get it when I get it. Not in a huge hurry. Played all these games anyway. Shame to hear about the performance issues, though. I would expect Nintendo to address those pretty quickly. They're usually pretty good about presenting their first party titles in a positive light...so I would imagine they would want to do whatever is possible to remedy that.

The inverted camera controls are my play style, so I’m not too bothered by this.

Now one change I didn’t care about was that when Mario threw Bowser at the mines, they changed his quote “So long, King Bowser” (or “So long-a Bowser”) to “Bye-Bye”. I haven’t found anything that bothered me about the game, yet. I haven’t played SM64 in over four years, so it takes a while to get used it again.

can't believe I'm gonna drop 80$ to play Sunshine on Switch but I am
Literally same cuz it's the one I haven't played before.
I'm also buying for the Galaxy OST though.

My big gripe with the title, though, is the graphics change in galaxy. For some reason they made galaxy more well lit and the air emptier, so it loses a lot of coziness that the original had which makes me sad.

Otherwise I'm veeeeery close to buying the 3D allstars (though I'm more excited about 3D world + bowser's fury cuz I've never played 3D world)

Galaxy has really grown on me, I totally get the hype now. Can't say the same for Sunshine though, the water controls annoy me too. xD

The camera is just so annoying, I don't remember that from the DS version. 😬
