Thoughts on Super Mario 3D All Stars

The camera is just so annoying, I don't remember that from the DS version. 😬
well it doesn't help that the camera has always been kinda wonky (I'm personally used to it) but I've noticed that it's hard to work with because you have to rotate the camera by using a control stick, whereas on an original N64 controller you press the C buttons to rotate it. it's less precise on the Switch version which makes it difficult to deal with.

I didn't realize all soundtracks were included, so that was a welcomed surprise. While I've played all three games previously, it's nice to have them in a bundle. Gives me a reason to play them all again and I've been having a lot of fun (except for the watermelon shine on Gelato Beach. No one asked for that).

It's weird to go from playing Sunshine to playing SM64 immediately afterwards. The controls and sensitivity are completely different and I find myself tip-toeing to avoid falling off a platform. The camera controls are awkward to switch between too. Probably should have started with SM64 before blazing through Sunshine in a day. 😅

I’ve been playing SM64 and wow the camera is a pain 😖 I forgot how much I suck at timing my jumps properly LOL got a lot of practicing to do to get all these stars but overall I’ve been having a fun time & enjoying the nostalgia 😊

I definitely agree with others on the camera in 64 being horrible. It really put me off the game at first, but today I’ve been getting used to it more and actually had quite a bit of fun with 64 today.

I’m the most excited to get to play Sunshine but I’m making myself finish 64 first since I’ve heard the two games control very differently. I look forward to playing Galaxy eventually as well but I’ve played that one before unlike the other two so it’s of lowest priority.

I don't really care about the camera being inverted in 64...because, I don't really have many memories of playing the original to base expectations on...but, I still don't like the camera at all. WAY too many blind spots. Even having full understanding of which controls make the camera turn which way...I find myself just unable to see what I'm trying to do.

So, I don't have the game yet, but I'm curious about some things, in particular the about Sunshine and Galaxy. Since I don't have my regular Switch anymore (for now), I can only play it on my Switch Lite. I heard some complaints about the controls being terrible? Are they really terrible? Is it hard to get used to them compared to the GameCube/Wii controls? And how are the games in general while playing it on handheld mode (like the Lite for example)? Is it enjoyable? I mainly play on handheld mode, but sometimes there are people saying certain games would work better on TV, so that's why I'm asking. (Hope it's okay to ask it here.)

So, I haven't played Galaxy for it yet, but for Sunshine, the controls aren't that bad imo. There are a lot of maneuver, but I like to learn them as I progress and I get taught through in-game tutorial instead of just all at once. Controlling the water can be a little aggravating and it can sometimes be a little hard to pinpoint what exactly you are hitting, but that just takes some getting used to. Though, the platforming side of it isn't bad at all.

I have never played the gamecube version so I can't really make a full-scale comparison, but based on my enjoyment of the game, I would say 3D All Stars is definitely worth it despite what others may say if you want these games on the Switch.

Oh and I haven't tried them handheld mostly because I like at least my sister as an audience, so my review is from personal experience playing it docked using a PowerA Switch Pro based controller.

As I’m playing the game, my experience with Super Mario Galaxy was much better on the Switch Lite than on the Wii U. I already beaten Super Mario 64, waiting for a good opportunity to play Sunshine.

Do you mean the Wii or did the Wii U get a port for that game?

Good to know that SMG is doing well on the Switch! I might save that one for last just because I already 100% the Wii version. :)

And perhaps by the time I get to it, SMG2 will have arrived for the Switch as well

I meant Wii, but I played it on the Wii U Virtual Console. Regardless, the motion controls sucked. I’m fine with touch controls.

If I had to rank Nintendo’s handling the games from best to worst, it would be:

1. Sunshine (for actually including it in this game)
2. Galaxy (for making it playable on handheld mode, good for Switch Lite users).
3. 64 (didn’t improve much, but at least easier than on N64).

I've really enjoyed playing these three games, Super Mario 64 definitely brings me back to when I was a kid playing the game, the camera really sucks but it must be muscle memory because I've been able to adjust rather quickly.. though I definitely have to be more careful when I am moving Mario around because he slides around a lot more in comparison to later games. I'm taking my time with it though.. and I still hate the water level, the music is so pretty but I have always hated water levels in video games.

I never played Mario Sunshine, and I didn't want to have to spend a lot of money on it to buy it for the GameCube because Mario games today are selling at a really high price .. especially GameCube games. (i'm looking at you Paper Mario Thousand Year Door)

I much prefer the controls on Galaxy for the Switch in comparison to the wii, it's a lot easier for me and I'm not getting as annoyed as I used to get when I played the game.

I never played the original 64 but did the camera suck in the original too? Or is it something new with the Switch version?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks the camera in SM64 is trash LOL
But I'm not surprised by the frame rate drops in SMS because they did scale it up to 60 FPS.

I don't think the game should have been $60 but I get why it is. Nintendo's core franchise games like Mario don't tend to depreciate all that much. If you tried to buy 64, Sunshine, & Galaxy right now, you wouldn't pay retail (maybe somewhere in the range of $20-25 for sunshine & galaxy, but 64's pricing is all over the place. I've seen it selling for $40-$100). At brand new, they're collector's items by now- you could be paying triple digits. So I'm not mad at the $20 a game price tag given the market, but I too expected there to be more polish to the actual games for that price. It's nice that you get the whole soundtrack included... (as if i wasn't just listening to them on soundcloud lol)
I haven't played SMG2 so it would have been a welcome addition. I'm also in the camp that Nintendo should have sold official Mario-themed GC & N64 wireless controllers for the Switch to play with these games, but maybe they figured the profit margins wouldn't be good enough to do that.
Nevertheless, I'm enjoying SM64 again: it's really been like 15 years since I played this game.

The camera was decent for its time in 1996, but it really sucks in comparison to today. It always annoyed me, but eventually you do get used to it.

I played “Super Mario Galaxy” and “Super Mario Galaxy 2” on Wii.

The fact this game does not include “2”—while including two games that do not interest me—has me thinking I would be paying $60 for one game which interests me.

I watched, on YouTube, two people discussing this pack. And it sounds to me like this pack is not good. That it is wise for me to, so far, not give Nintendo my money for a product not worthy of retail price.

At times, I feel like raking over the coals the people at Nintendo for how they operate.

I already got all 120 shines in Sunshine. I can't believe I still remembered where all of those blue coins are after all these years. I'm now working on SM64. I agree with others that the camera is annoying. Mario also seems to have less traction in 64 than in the future games. I did the baby penguin star on Cool, Cool Mountain and had trouble getting close enough to the edge of the stage to drop the baby penguin off. I was worried that Nintendo added some kind of invisible barrier in this version to prevent you from killing the baby penguin, but after getting close enough to the edge I was able to successfully send the baby penguin to its doom. That's definitely my favorite part of SM64.

I feel kinda bad for completionists who may be about to experience Super Mario 64 for the first time...

Enjoy those coin challenges lol

I preordered it and I'm crazy excited. Never played much of 64, and never got to experience Sunshine and Galaxy firsthand, so I'm definitely gonna have my hands full :)

How are you enjoying it now? I’ve played 64 but never galaxy or sunshine (and my sister sold my copies along with all my gc n64 gameboy etc games ><). A friend of mine helped me (we took turns) beat Mario 64. it was a lot of fun though there were some characters that scared me when I was little lol.

I unfortunately can't play it until closer to the holidays since school is keeping me busy :/ But I'll let you know how it is if you don't have it by then :) I have high hopes, it looks like a lot of fun and I'm desperately trying to avoid spoilers online.

im cool with it but i honestly have no clue why people think its hype at all like

Shin Megami Tensei V and Nocturne were more hype than this and hardcore nintendo fans threw tantrums over that
