Does anyone know if, like New Leaf, you'll be able to buy both a digital and physical copy of New Horizons to have two seperate towns?
You can't. The game file saves on the switch regardless of cartridge or digital. It's only one town per switch.
Yeah. One island per switch, unfortunately. Really disappointing for families that have only one switch console but several members want their own island. I'm not really sure why they did that, but it is what it is, I guess.
Looks like its just one island per switch. I was talking to my sister about this yesterday and she made a good point saying that by doing this, Nintendo really missed out on a whole bunch of sales. She is totally right, most of the people I know on here have multiple new leaf towns on their 3DS, and even though the price of NH is high, I'm sure others like them would have still save up to buy at least one more, if not two or three, game cartridges so they can design multiple islands. I really think this was a mistake on Nintendo's part.
So far, no I don't know why they decided to do this.Do you have any idea on why they might have done this? I really can't seem to find a reason why this would have been a good idea on their part.

Because Nintendo is "family first" and not "Gamer first". They don't want nor intend for the Switch to be a personal gaming console.

I can't really see how that'd be family first since this mainly affects families. For a single gamer I don't have to share my town so there's no issue. Obviously for families, majority of members want the ability to design their own personal towns which isn't possible.
I think the biggest "theory" is that they want switch sales.
That's my point, as a single gamer you don't want to share your town. But Nintendo thinks it's better for families to share a town and work together..
That's more of a far reaching conspiracy.
It is, hence why I stated it doesn't make sense compared to sales they would have had with copies.
I can see your point of view on sharing one town but I still feel like that's far reaching. They know by now their audience for the game. They've certainly brought a lot of features to NH to make it more player friendly and convenient. I haven't seen any family review yet that honestly speaks highly of the restrictions one save file has and, rather, you just see those families purchase multiple consoles for their children/partners. Especially with other nintendo titles and their save formats for multiple users, it just doesn't match up to me that it's the driving factor.
It would be nice if we could get an official nintendo response on the reasoning but I also won't be surprised if we ever do.
yeah I also feel like most (if not all) families would not want to do this. I guess they just want more switch sales, which I feel like would backfire since the switch is soooo much more expensive compared to the individual game cartridges. Like I said, I think it would be more likely for people to buy multiple games than buy multiple switches....I also feel that families would rather have the option for separate towns? Maybe I'm in the minority, but I personally don't know of any families that would prefer to all share a town rather than having one of their own.

yup, I see your point. I still feel like they are missing out on a bunch of sales though! This might be a bit of a stretch but maybe Nintendo sacrificed sales for upholding a reputation? They have been known for "family" consoles so maybe they wanted Animal Crossing to be marketed as a game you can play with the whole family, hence sharing one town and one town only?
