I've noticed a trend here lately of people saying that they will be buying multiple copies of the upcoming game in order to have multiple towns. Well I'm here to tell you that you will be wasting money if you do that.

The way the Nintendo Switch handles save data is different from what you're used to with the 3DS. Nintendo Switch game cards are read-only, meaning that the data that is on the card is the only data allowed on the card. the Switch does write your save data to the card itself. This was done for, presumably, two reasons: One being to stave off people loading cracked save data in order to allow homebrew as was the case with the Wii, Wii U and 3DS. The second reason being the price of the game cards in comparison to 3DS cards. They aren't cheap to manufacture at all, and there are still some sizes that aren't in mass production yet due price, hence why we see so many releases that come with codes to download the second game.

Because save data is now written to your Switch console, buying multiple copies of a game WILL NOT grant you access to multiple save files. If you create a town using the physical copy of the game and then later buy a digital copy or a second physical copy, they will all read from from the same data you created initially. There is nothing to differentiate the different copies of the game, so you will be throwing away money by doing this.

The Switch allows for up to 8 different profiles on one console with each profile getting its own friend code and data storage. This is how you'll likely get your multiple towns, via creating more profiles on your Switch. Of course we don't know how Animal Crossing 2019 will work or if we'll be forced to create one town and all 8 profiles on the Switch create a character within that one chunk of data or what.

So how are we expected to save our data in the event of a system failure? The simple fact of the matter is we don't know. Ideally, it will support the cloud save feature that comes with the $20 annual subscription fee to Nintendo Switch Online, but Nintendo may disable that to prevent cheating and duplication as they did with Splatoon 2 and Pokemon Let's Go.

So to recap:

1. Buying multiple copies of the game will not allow you to make multiple towns
2. Your save data is stored on the Switch console itself, not the game card.
3. It doesn't matter if you buy digital or physical, you're only getting one town per profile
4. Your town data will be at the mercy of the console itself
5. Creating multiple profiles (up to 8) might allow for up to 8 towns on a single console
6. Nintendo Switch Online Cloud Saves MAY allow you to permanently keep your town safe via the cloud
7. Cloud saves may be disabled to prevent cheating

Thanks for making this thread. I think this should be pinned, especially after reading the other thread and considering the general misinformation regarding the handling of save data on the Switch.

I think it's most likely cloud saves will be disabled due to the possibility of duplicating items. It sucks, but it's the Nintendo way. It is possible to back-up Switch saves the homebrew route, but obviously this is an inconvenience, and Nintendo sure enjoys banning hacked systems.

I'm kind of thankful the switch works this way. I had three ACNL cartridges, and I will probably make multiple towns for the switch game too. I don't really want to spend more than $60 for multiple games, but I'd spend $60 to automatically have the potential for several towns.

Thank you for making this thread; it's very helpful.

This is also very disappointing news. I had a lot of corruption issues with my digital copy of ACNL, so having my save data be at the mercy of my Switch console makes me nervous.

Originally, I thought you can have multiple towns by creating multiple profiles, which I planned on doing when I get AC for the Switch. I was right all along, but thanks for warning us about that.

Now one thing I have to ask is this. Will I be able to use Nintendo Switch Online with the same account, but different profiles?

Thank you for clearing this up, I know people who planned on getting multiple cartridges for multiple towns and I'm glad that you have saved them money with this information, if it's one town per console though, I will be pretty disjointed (auto-correct did this and I thought it was funny so i'm keeping it this way, lol.). It would be cool if it was somewhat the way it worked back in Population Growing where you can travel between the towns of the eight profiles.

Although, having a max of eight players in a single, small town may be too cramped and I don't see that working. Also, when transferring one profile to a separate switch with a town already made, I don't think that it would make you immediately be forced to move into the town on the second console, losing all your progress on your town in the original switch.

So I'm hoping and predicting a single town per profile system.

We really don't know how it's going to work on Switch yet. But maybe they could add the option to add another town via DLC. They surely know that many people like to create multiple towns, and I think it would be a profitable option for Nintendo to give us. Not that I'm hoping for the game to have paid DLC, but an optional town manager that allows multiple towns is something that justifies a (reasonable) cost IMO.

If the alternative is only having one town per console, I think people will gladly take it. Especially since I can't imagine it would cost nearly as much as buying a second cartridge.

But are there actually even any games currently that don't have separate save games for each profile? I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one game (My Hero: One's Justice, IIRC) that has you select the profile in-game and not on the home screen, so I assume it's possible to remove the option entirely, but I haven't seen a game yet where they've done it.
That being said, I only have a handful of games ATM, lol.

Each account will need its own subscription. You can do this by buying the $35 annual family plan that allows for up to 8 shared accounts in a single subscription.

Each profile is a separate account. In order to have online, you would want the family plan, which is $35 for up to 8 accounts, instead of $20/1 account.

then watch as nintendo makes switch crossing like wild world, where it's all just a single file shared by multiple switch profile accounts

also, like wild world, everyone shares the same house

What I mean is, can I use the same FC and e-mail address on different Switch profiles? And do I have to add the same friends over on other profiles?

No. Each profile on the Switch is completely separate; All will have different friend codes/require a different email address. Friend lists are also separate.

The other profiles aren't an extension of your main profile. They're meant for other members in your family to have a place to play without interfering everyone elses info.

Thanks for your info on this and all the other info people posted here, that is a big clear-up. I know it worked that way with Zelda but didn’t even think about what would happen if a switch messed up, I guess getting online is the way to go! Hopefully they support cloud save, we will just have to see.

ill probably use one main town for online stuff and if i want to trade between my towns i ask a friend(local) to hold on to my stuff.
trading between your own towns will really be a pain tho haha im really glad my bf has his own switch and wants to have animal crossing too

edit: well i guess you already have to have two 3ds to trade between your own towns but thats a little easier since they are not that expensive and a lot of people have the old and the new 3ds

One more question. If I create different towns on different profiles and want to share them or have internet visitors, do I need e-mail addresses on all of them to share them online?
