Villagers in boxes unable to be obtained?

Hi! I need confirmation as I've been told that it's not possible to ask villagers in boxes to move into my island anymore like in New Leaf. Is this true or false? Has anyone successfully picked up villagers?

It works but it bugs out a lot and sometimes leaves you with a glitched villager

False, you can invite boxed villagers to your town. HOWEVER, they are currently.. very glitchy, to the point where its pretty harmful to your game. I would refrain from doing it until Nintendo is notified of it, and fixes it.

Just to clarify, after a lot of asking around, people have found out that the glitch only happens when the campsite is used to force a villager into boxes. Villagers that ask to move out under normal circumstances are totally safe to adopt.

It can apparently happen rarely to 'normal' move-outs as well. Much less often, though.
