Hey hey!!!
Sooo after like, a year of being too daunted to start, I finally started flattening my island and building it up bit by bit, and surprisingly enough I’ve already gotten positive feedback on my terraforming. So, I made this thread to post some ‘weird’ as in uncommon terraforming tips I wish I had when I started:

1. Play around with the tools while you flatten a section. You’d be surprised how much you can get a feel of a tool just by seeing what happens if you break down cliffs and rivers in different ways. What happens if you round the corner and then break the tile next to it? Or round off two corners and break the tile in the middle? Play with it, you’ll learn a lot and it’ll make flattening a section go way faster too.

2. While building things up first play around with it too. See if you can make a heart shaped pond (not because you want one there but to figure out the water mechanics) see how wacky you can get your cliff shapes, what do waterfalls do and how do they work?

3. Go to amazing dream islands and... Focus on what you don’t like. 😂 Seriously. It’s wayyyyy too easy to get caught up in ‘everything here is so amazing I could neeever do that’ I know. But it gets way easier if you look for things you dislike. Maybe you don’t like waterfalls coming out of nowhere. Maybe you don’t like custom designs everywhere, maybe you don’t like indoor furniture outside. Whatever it is you don’t like, it’s valid and it helps you develop your own taste so when you build up your own island it’ll be special to you.

4. Only once you’ve got the hang of figuring out what you *don’t* want to do, try and get inspiration for what you *do* like. Look for *your* favourite items and how they’re used. Look for ideas for *your* favourite features. Ignore everything mediocre. You’re designing something *you* love, anything or any item you’re ‘meh’ about isn’t automatically amazing because the island as a whole is beautiful. You’ll get there eventually and make an island *you* love.

this is really great advice, thank you! any tips for building up cliffs and making them look more natural? i feel like all my cliffs just look like beans and it's not good 😓

Hey!!! I'm so glad you like the tips :D
My tip for making cliffs look natural is really being very random with building them up, if you place a square somewhere random by mistake, leave it and build everything else up to it. Then when you've got a random blocky shape, round off all the corners. I like to break up any '3' shapes I get in the cliffs because I think two lumps next to each other like that looks a bit weird/unnatural, but otherwise everything looks pretty good
