Were gemstones implemented back into the game or is their any inclination for gemstones to be back at some point?

Was wondering if they ever added gemstones back into the game? I don't recall seeing that in the recent update video so I was curious because I haven't played in a year!

I have seen no mention of them unfortunately, they might have but it's unlikely.

Gemstones would be great to have back so I really hope they come back at some point..

I haven't seen anything on it so I wouldn't get my hopes up too much, but it's still a possibility, since the Direct didn't show us everything that's coming in the update. I'd love to have them back myself, even though I didn't ever use the gemstone furniture; I think they were very pretty as decoration on their own. And hey, I might like any updated gemstone items/DIYs more than the New Leaf ones, if they do ever make a return.

I also noticed a minecart with gems inside in their house, so that makes me think gems might be back in some capacity

I was just going to post this (haven't posted here in months, though I still play the game every day and have since launch!).

I noticed two minecarts outside of Timmy & Tommy's vacation house, one that looks like it has stone or diamonds in it and one with amethysts?
They also have the amethyst cart inside their house. Maybe these carts are from crafting and/or customizable and you use ores.

I don't think we've gotten items like these before, have we? In New Leaf or Happy Home Designer?
Maybe it hints at something, maybe not. I caught them when I rewatched the Direct earlier today.
I was thinking, maybe they'll bring back the ore rock for our home islands and also add an ore rock island to the Dodo Airlines Mystery Island Tours? Could be a way to keep the Dodo Airlines Mystery Island Tours relevant...

They weren't mentioned in the direct, which was about the last major update, but I suppose there's a slim chance they'll be added as some of the additional, un-shown changes Nintendo mentioned at the end.

I wouldn't count on it, though.
