What are some mistakes you made when you first played ACNH?

Honestly, trying to finish my island quickly.
I felt like I needed to hurry, as other people were getting their islands done and I felt behind.
It was a mess in the end and I absolutely didn’t enjoy my island, which caused me to restart completely.

Taking my time and working in small sections has been way better.

i didn’t choose my island layout as carefully as i should’ve. when i was choosing my map, the only things i wanted were peaches as my native fruit, and for my resident services to not be super close to my airport. i thought i had chosen an island with both, but my resident services is a bit too close to my airport for me to design an island entrance that i’m actually happy with, plus i’m just not really happy with where it is in general. i don’t want to reset my island, but if i could go back to march 2020, i’d definitely choose a different layout lol.

i also let a few villagers move out without obtaining their photos first, which i regret. i had collected all of the villager photos in new leaf, so i thought i would just collect the photos of the villagers i like. i of course changed my mind though, since i’m a collector and a completionist lol. i was able to buy the photos from someone, but i wish i had obtained them myself.

Picking an Island with the resident service waaaaay to close from the airport entrance. I was so sure you could move that thing un the future, i was like meh, the heart pound is cute.

I had to restart because i could'nt do an entrance like i wanted.

this isn't strictly when i *first* started playing but resetting my island thinking it'd get me back into the game lol... now i have a half-finished untouched island instead of a completed island i can run around every now and then. i don't entirely regret it though.

to actually stay on topic, i didn't realise you HAD to invite your first campsite villager so when i saw it was phil i decided to leave him there because i very much didn't want him on my island. but of course when i went back the next day he was there, so i realised pretty quick what i was supposed to do

A mistake I made was just buying everything so I had all the different colours of stuff which just filled up my inventory of stuff I never used I should of just catalogued them all so I could buy them later if I wanted.

Bought too many pumpkins trying to get the different colors, only to realize i could’ve planted the ones I had already grown.

Not my brightest moment

Oh yeah I remember that I was very confused with the pumpkins. In my mind I thought if you watered the pumpkins you would get different colors but it didn't work that way so I did I find out you need to plant them which is hard because the colors with the pumpkins are RNG.

I bought a switch lite in the summer of 2020 after playing ACNH on my original switch since launch. I wiped my original switch because I was selling it to a coworker and I fully thought my island would just transfer over to my new switch. I realized the hard way that I was wrong lol.

The times before the island transfer tool were dark, indeed.

Definitely mine is not donating fish/bugs/fossils right away!! I cringe thinking about all the valuable / rare items I sold instead of donating, LOL

Not restarting the whole island when it forced-move in Graham as my smug villager. I had played for 30 minutes at that point. I could have easily started over and not have to live through a month-long saga of trying to boot that weirdo.

When I shot a floating balloon with a present, it fell into the river
i've done this too haha

my biggest mistake was honestly... (i've made too many) probably going too fast through the game. it was always a race to the finish line for me, so i never truly enjoyed it. and also filling my plots up too quick. i think it's unfair that you have to have at least 8 villagers to get terraforming.

Not talking to villagers more!

The initial dialogue (“You again?” “Is this Island not big enough?” etc.) really scared me off of talking to them more than once or twice a day. It was unpleasant and made me worry about lowering friendship with them.

On my new Island, I’ve been approaching them whenever I feel like it, and found that there’s so much dialogue I missed out on!

Specifically, there’s dialogue you only have a small window of getting, like comments on the Museum Tent, first bridge, neighbor move-ins etc. Once you’ve passed the day those things were new on, the option disappears forever!

It’s such a shame too, because that dialogue has been some of my favorite in the whole game. It really makes the Island feel more real when villagers actually comment on what’s been happening / what you’ve accomplished.

The funniest so far was Reneigh commenting on a bridge construction I’d set up—she said it was in one of her favorite natural spots, so I’d better have a good reason for building something there lol

I find it funny how villagers easily get annoyed whenever you talked to them a 2nd time.

Mine was TT’ing waaaaay too much, I got way ahead of myself rather than just enjoying the game. Now I’ve had to restart due to getting a new switch I’m just enjoying the pace rather than rushing through it :)

One of the biggest mistakes that I made was thinking that the golden flowers spawned in the exact same way as New Leaf. I felt so embarrassed when I kept watering the black roses with the golden watering can when they were totally boxed in. Another mistake was using the axe to get the golden axe. I thought it was how many times you used the axe, not the flimsy axe. The flimsy axe method of getting the golden axe is strange to me.

Oh yeah I am gulity of this too. I did that way too much back in 2020.

Brewster yelling at me for paying with tabs. For some reason, he does not like me paying it that way when I have quests over. Oh and also sitting in the booths in the coffee place and was told I was not allowed to sit there.

I made some oopsies:
  • I did not know that fishing bait was a thing while the Stringfish was in season when the game came out. I had to wait until December to catch it, and it was the last fish my museum needed. I had to wait that long anyways for a different river fish that only appears from December to February, so no real harm done there.
  • When group stretches came out in 2.0, I did not do a single one for a solid year because I thought you couldn't do them with the pro controller. One random day, I just decided to do it 'cause why not, and then I read that you could use the pro controller after all 🙃
  • Some villagers in HHP I intended to just be roommates with others, but instead I built houses for them because I did the process wrong.
  • There were several times I wanted to buy more turnips from Daisy Mae, but then 12PM hit and she went sayonara.
  • I forgot to buy the 2021 Celebratory Arch during New Year's for catalog completion reasons. I eventually obtained it through other means, however.
