What are some people you used to look up to that are now controversial?

As someone who leaned on The Beatles during childhood and is a lifelong fan, it's impossible to not run into the occasional person who brings up that John Lennon was a terrible human being.

I won't defend him. He had no reason to treat his child and spouse the way that he did.

...Yet, if you look towards the end of his life, he was open about his issues and clearly beggining to mend relationships. Then he was murdered at a young age in a senseless act of violence by a stranger.

It's a situation that I look at with...ambiguity? Who knows what would have become of him. I believe that people have the capability of change if that change is sincerely wanted by the person.

I will always love the band. Lennon is shrouded in controversy, and I have complex feelings about him.

Used to watch sniperwolf, now I won't go near her channel. Also I used to be obsessed with family vlog channels in general when I was 12, but I've since learned about the exploitation aspect of it, and I just feel bad for the kids who are born into them.

Probably all male YouTubers I watched when I was 12.

I watched Shane Dawson for the longest time. Listened to his (first) podcast before podcasts were even a thing. It's weird to be a kid listening to him saying all those messed up stuff and liking him for being brutally honest, seeing him turn into the biggest YouTuber at one point by faking a nice guy persona and completely selling out in every sense of the word to see him only get cancelled when people point out stuff from ten years ago. He did disgusting stuff I didn't recognize as a kid and I do believe the stories on his podcast were genuine because I listened to all the episodes at the time and he just was like that, but I think he should have been cancelled when he cried in front of definitely minimum wage paid workers in a warehouse and filmed it for his ""documentary"". When D'Angelo Wallace, a very small art content creator at the time, made a drama video on him at the height of his popularity, I was so happy to see the tide finally turning.

Superluv still slapped though, what a different time that was.

Mark Hamill. I can’t say I looked up to him but I liked him as an actor and for awhile his political comments on twitter but I’m troubled by his comment
”America supports Israel!” It’s true obviously, but it is like saying he approves that turning a blind eye to the 75 years of oppression and human rights abuse there. He says he loves children but he had no comment to say when there are pictures of dead Palestinians posted by Palestinian reporters.

I used to like Will Smith too but that one Oscars and the whole thing about the open marriage kinda changed my opinion; Idc what people do if both partners are happy, but that was too much detail to me.

Another, the voice actor of Cullen from Dragon Age, Greg Ellis, He stood up for J.K. Rowling when she made those really awful comments. I went to one of his poetry nights when I was still a fan and there was an awkward silence when he came to my comment even though it was almost the same as someone else who commented that he replied to. I don’t care if a VA doesn’t respond ; I don’t expect them to since there are so many posts and they are busy and human, but idk, the way that happened made me uncomfortable. On twitter he has given me the impression of being kinda an arrogant prick even though he seemed cool at first. I heard there was some controversy with him with Bioware and elsewhere too; Idk what happened, I looked a bit into the bioware drama and both him and the person he was working with seemed to have acted unprofessionally.

Usually I get “a vibe” from people, if you know what I mean, but it’s harder to tell with some people.

Featureman was a shocker for me. If you don’t know, he is a YouTuber with 300k subs at his peak. He is an older man who cooked unique meals and talked about his life in show business. (He was an extra in a lot of TV shows and movies.) Since he knew a lot of actors and worked on popular movies, it made for some interesting stories. He is also a musician who wrote and performed some songs on YouTube.

ANYWAY last year he got exposed for some crimes he committed in his past. (1970s) I won’t say what they were, but they involved teenage boys. This happened before the offender registry so he can still hand out candy on Halloween, etc. It was an older court case, but someone found it online.
So, he made a video called “Jailhouse Adventures” where he addressed this and pretty much said the judge was homophobic, which wasn’t the problem here— it was that these were kids. He also said jail was “a good experience.” People left a lot of angry comments and he deleted the video, but I remember watching it that night.

(Personally, I felt the title was insensitive and made light of the situation.)

Some big YouTubers ended up talking about this— like penguinz0 and SomeOrdinaryGamers.

In retrospect, some lyrics in his songs sound creepy when you know what happened. People also unveiled his IMDb account and a website where he wrote some…odd fiction, to say the least.

I know he’s not that famous, but it was definitely a let-down for me. In a sea of obnoxious Internet users, I liked low-key YouTubers like him and ReviewBrah/TheReportoftheWeek. (still watch ReviewBrah though) I really didn’t there would be anything in his past.

Projared and The Completionist are YouTubers I used to look up to. They introduced me to many video games and entertained me a lot while growing up. Then I found out the former cheated on his wife, and the second committed charity fraud. Now, my memories of watching their videos are mixed.

Then there's Neil Gaiman. I adored Good Omens and some of his short stories. His writing style was amazing, and I loved his creative stories. Then, the way he treated people behind the scenes was revealed. I can't even bring myself to read anything he writes anymore because he turned out to be such a creep.

There hasn't been many, I seem to know like vibe wise when it comes to watching people.
I once watched one of Illumathi's videos but felt off about her so never watched her. Now I know why.

I used to watch Shane Dawson a lot, but honestly, I watched him for Garrett so I subbed to him instead. My good friend still watches him, but I don't say too much about it. Funnily enough, I remember when I was first watching his videos, and his reaction to this one thing really put me off him even then.
His theories never actually helped me, they made my sleeping patterns worse due to the subject so I stopped watching.

I think the one that truly upset me was Cryaotic. That really made me sad. I rarely unsub from people, so that was really hard to do. I bet he's glad he never showed his face.
I think the only time I will revisit his channel would be to find out a game he played, so I can find the name of it so I can play it myself.

I used to watch a reaction person called BlathomousHD or whatever but I stopped watching him years ago, and I actually heard some stuff about him. I forget what though.

I used to absolutely love Pogo and his music (the guy who would remix Disney movies/other movies into songs, super wholesome-seeming stuff)... Then he decided to show his true colors right after one of the most horrific shootings of all time. Big yikes. Luckily his career tanked

Sia because of how awful she turned out to be after people called her out for making Music and making it so insulting and offensive to the entire autistic community. The fact that her movie actually angered Autism Speaks so much that they even publicly denounced the entire thing is really saying something. The organization that once compared having autism in your house to having bed bugs was offended by Sia. The thing that make Sia a truly horrible person is how she tries to gaslight everyone who has criticized Music and acts like she’s some victim and she still has not honored her promise to remove the controversial scenes displaying “being crushed with love” after many told her how traumatic it actually is to have that happen to you and how it has even killed some of those who fell victim to it. I even had to explain thus before on Facebook after someone asked the very same question and someone tried to guilt shame me by saying that I was wrong and stupid for hating Sia and that she was so inspirational for overcoming so much adversity. I told that person that my hatred was justified and that I’m not the only person who despises Sia ever since Music was released. Not to mention her obsession with Maddie Ziegler is super creepy and I’m happy Maddie has since distanced herself from the singer.

I used to really love SilverLeagueNetworks on YouTube, if for nothing else than the fact that their Pokemon videos were really fun to watch. Later on I learned what happened to them. Apparently the main guy for the channel got into trouble for something disgusting. Not going to say what it is here, but iykyk.

i think Gaiman has been my one and only of this kind of thing. adored GO to bits, then he turned out to be a creepy wretched man.

luckily, i never watched anyone else growing up that had this sort of thing happen to them. everyone i watched has been relatively normal. vinny/vinesauce, joel, jerma. please dont turn out to be massive creeps 🤞

I believe Nicki Minaj has been known for some questionable behavior recently. I don't really know, I'm not really following celebrity news anymore, but many years ago I really was inspired by her.

Bill Cosby. I grew up listening to his stand up albums over and over...

It can be difficult to separate a famous person's professional and personal life, at least for me.

What is more important to you? The entertainment the individual gave you publicly? Or their personal life?

A lot of brilliant people in history are a bit troubled personally.

In an antique store, I saw he had a comedy album titled, “Bill Cosby Is a Funny Guy, Right?” Safe to say that title didn’t age very well.
