From their second album,
Play It Loud. Slade were known for being one of the biggest and most inspirational glam rock bands throughout the '70s, yet this album (as well as their 1969 debut
Beginnings - released as
Ballzy in the US - when they were originally called "Ambrose Slade") is a notable departure from the norm as it features mostly pop-oriented tracks. In fact,
Beginnings features mostly covers originally written by a wide array of artists, such as Ted Nugent, Frank Zappa, The Beatles, Jeff Lynne (before Electric Light Orchestra, whom back then was virtually unknown outside the UK), Marvin Gaye, Steppenwolf, and The Moody Blues. It wasn't until the release of several non-album singles and their critically-acclaimed 1972 album
Slayed? that the band would start to make a name for themselves, inspiring more artists to try their hand at glam rock.
As for this track itself, it's very British-like, and features violin playing by bass player and co-songwriter Jim Lea. In fact, he was actually a member of a classical orchestra before becoming a rock star. Yep, classical to glam rock. It just goes to show that some talented artists can come up from unexpected places.
