My parents still think the internet is a horrible place. They think I'll give out my location and a predator will come to my door, but I'm old enough to take care of myself and to know not to share said personal information. My parents still treat me like I'm 12, even though I'm old enough to be an adult and make my own decisions. They need to know that not every single human-being on the internet is a predator seeking out children.
What do your parents think about the internet? Do they know you use it everyday to communicate to others, or are you still doing it behind their backs like I am? I've been using the internet to speak to online friends since I was 13. My mom especially has caught me a couple of times throughout, but only recently did I begin to get pissed about the fact that they will never understand and realize that I'm not dumb as they think.

EDIT:
I found this article by Randye Hoder and thought I share a portion of it with you guys.

"The Internet isn’t full of sexual predators waiting to prey on our children.

Boyd is careful here, clearly not wanting to dismiss parents’ apprehensions about their kids’ security and wellbeing. “They are afraid because terrible things do happen to children,” she acknowledges.

But she argues that parents should keep things in perspective. “Internet-initiated sexual assaults are rare,” she writes, adding that the overall number of sex crimes against minors has actually been falling for more than two decades—a strong indication that “the Internet is not creating a new plague.”

In fact, as Boyd points out, studies show that teenagers are far more likely to be attacked by a family member or someone else they know from school or their place of worship than by a sketchy adult they meet online.

“A central challenge in addressing the sexual victimization of children is that the public is not comfortable facing the harrowing reality that strangers are unlikely perpetrators,” Boyd writes."

My parents enjoy using the internet. They personally only use it for Facebook and watching TV online and they absolutely love it. My mom is always looking at shopping apps as well. They are always so amazed when they find out what you can do with the internet. Google maps, looking up weather, checking phone numbers, everything you can literally look up - they are just in awe with it.

My Mum uses the internet for Facebook and just searching things in general and occasionally ordering things from Amazon.

She doesn't really have much opinions on the internet, however she says she is disgusted about how people talk on it, I have to agree.

She doesn't understand the internet in the way we do. You know what I'm talking about.

My parents use it for things like that sometimes, but not often. My mom mainly uses it to check her email for work and what not. I think my dad enjoys using it more than my mom actually. He likes to watch movie trailers or listen to music videos.
I just wish they realize it isn't such a bad place though when it comes to communicating with others. D":

Yeah, I would have to agree with that too. And yeeep. xD
Like literally, if there wasn't the internet and my internet friends I don't know what I'd do. lmao

my parents are on the internet alot so im assuming they like the internet lmao

lol i have no idea, but she uses it that i do know. i'll have to give her a call later!

My mom thinks the internet is the worst invention ever. She's said those exact words. She thinks it's destroying the world. She's always trying to get me off of it.

My dad likes it, he uses it for a lot of things.

While the internet is not "full" of predators, they still exist. Not to mention, if a black hat hacker wanted to get at your personal information, he could easily.

My mother believes that the Internet is good for a lot of things, including seeing places online, reading about people and educational stuff, but she is extremely, and I mean extremely against young people talking to complete strangers online. To a degree, I've always agreed with her, but I'm a hypocrite for obvious reasons. I can only learn from my mistakes.

Wait, really? How is the internet destroying the world? If anything its helping it

My parents like the internet. We live on the internet haha.

My mom used the internet, and her laptop, as an expensive facebook machine. That's like ALL she does online, is go on facebook, play facebook games, I tell her it's kind of a waste because she does all that on her phone as well, so it kind of makes her laptop obsolete.

My parents like the internet.
They are both programmers so they are obviously on the computer a lot.
my whole family (close family) like the internet, video games and stuff
you could say we are a "hip" family (⌐■_■)

My mother ran a rat healthcare forum for many years and my Dad is heavily into MMORPGs. I was the last one in the family to get into using the internet on a day-to-day basis.

meh
they dont really care that much, when i was younger they were a lot more suspicious abt who i was talking to online but now they've just stopped being like "u m they coudl b ANYONE ??+" and just let me be. it's nice.

Well my mother thinks I spend too much time on it but she uses it often for facebook and work and my dad is forced to use it for work. My parents know it can be bad but they trust me because I've grown up with it and know what not to do.
The only think they really like that I do is keep up with my IRL friends when I don't have time to meet them/away from home and they think it's sociable going on skype chats with them.

My mom made her own website for work, and my dad is a computer software salesman, so... Yeah. They like and use the internet. I, however, don't tell them about this awesome forum, because my mom would be all, "They're gonna murder you!" Because a website made for an E For Everyone game is totally evil, and everyone on here is totally a criminal. Plus, I never give out personal info, so... Yeah.

Well my dad used to be pretty into technology when I was younger, he was the one who introduced me to the internet and gaming and the like, but now he's absolutely horrendous at using computers, laptops, and especially smart phones. I admit, if I had a problem with my laptop that I didn't know how to fix, he could sort it, but that rarely happens now, my brother and I are pretty knowledgable about computers since... We're witnessing the rapid advancement of technology. We weren't addicted to using the computer, we'd be allowed on it to play some games afterschool and stuff, but then that was it, we had to read, watch TV, go to afterschool clubs, etc. Whereas now children are growing up being able to access the internet from wherever they are. It's great, but definitely think that if it's in the wrong hands technology can do more bad than good.

As for my mum, she does use the internet quite a lot too, uses it to check social media, sometimes to do shopping, book holidays, read up on things, etc, but she uses a tablet rather than a laptop or computer. My dad tends to use it for the same things, he also checks up on a lot of internet forums too.

It's funny though, my dad complains at me sometimes for checking my phone or looking at it whilst I'm out with family (it's not like I look at it the whole time), yet majority of the time, I could be talking to my dad about something, have a full blown conversation whilst he's on his phone, then he'll look up and say "what'd you say?". LOL. And he actually checks his phone an awful lot more than me or my brother do. It feels like middle aged people are definitely the ones to complain about how detrimental technology is to society, yet they'd happily sit at a table in a restaurant scrolling through Facebook whilst you're trying to talk to them.

My mum likes to complain about people using the internet all the time whilst being constantly glued to facebook 24/7.

She also gets me to buy things for her online because she thinks if she does it then everybody is going to steal her bank account information.

If the internet goes down, my brother and sister essentially shut down as well and almost cease to function as people because they're so dependent on the internet for their 'spare time' and have little to no hobbies other than watching videos on youtube. Like, literally, where other people would just pick up a book, draw, watch TV or god forbid go outside, if the internet is down they'll just sit in silence like they've been deactivated until it it's back on.

It's a great thing that it's so accessible these days since there are a ton of benefits to that, but I think it's pretty disgusting how dependent some people are on it.
