Title says it all.

I see posts from people about a catalogue and/or their catalogue, or wanting to catalog items.

What exactly does this mean and how does this differ from selling a product you already have in your DIY list.

Noob question, I know. If it helps, this is the first animal crossing game I have played.

Thanks!

cataloging an item means you can now order it through nook’s shopping

When you catalog it means that person will have the items on the floor. You pick them up and it registers as "your item" and you drop it back down. After this you can purchase those items via nook shopping

Otherwise the item would just appear randomly in your nooks shopping over so much time?

And people do this to have quicker access to items?

Are we talking about the nook store you pay in bells, miles, or both?

As soon as you pick up an item, it adds it to your in-game catalog. Then you can order it whenever you'd like your own copy.

So when people go visit others to catalog, it means you pick up an item (so it'll get added to your catalog), and then drop it because you're not keeping the item. If you want your own copy, like I said, you can order it later.

Cataloguing basically seems to be the highest form of completionism in Animal Crossing. The furniture you pick up is registered in your catalogue, build up in the Nook Terminal. Cataloguing is seeking to fill this selection with every (or as many as possible) items in the game.
