Mine is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. It was the most beautiful, complex story I have ever read, and I loved it so much <3 Has anybody read this book? I know people tend to get scared off by its size and Hugo's tendency to veer off track for pages and pages and pages.. But I recommend this book to everyone who loves to read.

Tell me what your favourite books are, and why you love it so much! :)

I read a lot of art books and biographies. Not sure if they really count, though. I don't read nearly as much as I would like to.

Do graphic novels count? I really liked the BONE series, it's really good and the art is on point.

A Song of Ice and Fire. An intimidating series to begin reading due to its length but well worth the time and effort. The TV show does it justice but isn't nearly as detailed as the books and is told from a completely different narrative.

That's definitely a series I'm very interested in :) But I'm waiting for the final books to come out. I hate starting a series that is unfinished.

Unfortunately you may be waiting forever as I suspect the author will die before he manages to finish the series at this rate. :( The TV show has progressed past the books but takes place in an alternate timeline to make up for it. I have doubts he even knows how the series is supposed to end. It's still a great read though, a bit dry at times but it can also be a real page turner.

Yeah, let's hope not though :p There was supposed to only be one book left but rumour has it JRR Martin is planning 2 books still... Another series that I have no hope of the author finishing is The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss. I really want to read it, but there's no point if a series will never actually have a proper ending :(

I loved Maximum Ride by James Patterson + the manga adaptation of it. I also love the Swindle Mystery series by Gordon Korman. And let's not forget my Blue Exorcist manga by Kazue Kato B) For some reason, I just really like science fiction + fantasy + realistic fiction books. Those keep me entertained for days lol

All of you guys seem to have a good sophisticated favorite read and here I am with my favorite.

Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark Treasury by Alvin Schwartz.

It is silly but its one of the books I can re-read constantly. I don't get tired of it. The art is genuinely creepy and I am obsessed with folklore of any kind.

I recently read While My Eyes Were Closed by Linda Green as I received it as a gift for Christmas and for some reason I was really drawn to it. It's interesting how some misunderstandings can lead to complications and situations that can cause major affects on other people, I thought that it was a touching story and at first I didn't really know who to feel sympathy for.

I was going to say exactly this when I clicked on the thread! :O Mine too! Yes, I agree completely! I love it so much. <3
Which translation did you read may I ask? Mine was the F/M translation. It's complete and unabridged, except for two sentences that accidentally got left out of all English versions of the book... But I wrote those back in. ;)

I'm currently working on an ACNL room based on a scene from it actually!

I haven't actually read Les Mis, but I've watched the musical plus seen a couple of different movie versions.

I don't really have a favorite book because I've read an enormous amount over the course of my life. Here's the most recent books I really enjoyed a lot though:

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
For the older people here who actually lived through the '80s, this will be a real treat for you. There's tons of references to all kinds of stuff, but primarily the video games that were big at the time.

Goldenhand by Garth Nix
The most recent of the fantastic Abhorsen series (if anyone wants to read this series - start with Sabriel, which is book 1). Basically, this is a fantasy series that features good necromancers.

Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood.

it's heartbreaking and beautiful. i think it's the only book i've read more than once.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. Super long book but well worth the read, a very emotional (and overall depressing) read but fantastic nonetheless.

Nineteen Eighteen-Four by George Orwell. A powerful and frightening social commentary. In second place for me is Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami.

silly that i always think of this first, despite having read some really incredible other stories, but i think as a kid, the most important to me and one of the most lasting till today was the immortals quartet by tamora pierce. it just had so much life and character and was such a fun take on a fantasy novel that was written by a girl, for girls. really validating and lovely, still to this day.

i think if i was answering more like, books i think everyone should read, no matter what - then the realm of possibility by david levithan is definitely it. it's a story about stories, broken into sections with different points of view and they all make use of such amazing innovative ways of storytelling: poetic verse, song, free verse, standard realistic narration etc. it's such a refreshing and beautiful piece of work, featuring people and loves of all types. never read anything else like it, ever.

So you've read "the brick" too! Les Miserables is my favorite book also. I cried like a baby many times throughout the 2-3 months it took me to read through. I also cried watching the 2012 film. :p but the book was a much more wonderful experience.

I read Charles E. Wilbour's translation ^_^ It's also unabridged! Unfortunately, it didn't translate any of the poetry, which was really sad :( But it was lovely in all other ways. I had no idea there were two sentences that were left out!! In ALL translations?? Why?

Which scene is it? :)

LOL yes! "The Brick" I definitely cried buckets at the ending. I was actually a fan of the musical before I read the book. I loved the Dream Cast 10th Anniversary of the show! The music is so beautiful ^_^ It made me want to read the book, but I had heard how different it was and was afraid to ruin my thoughts on Les Mis. But I finally did, and OMG I had no idea I could love it more than the musical (story-wise at least). What a fantastic journey with depth and emotion and complexity.

I've been starting to challenge myself with some extreme literature lately so i started reading Everyone Poops by Taro Gomi. They even plan on making it into a movie aswell...
