The Woolly Mammoth was just an example.
My post firstly said "Something from the Jurassic era, or something that's extinct".
I could see tons of neat designs for lizards - like horned ones, geckos, iguanas, and the like.
Maybe they could do bug-like fairy villagers, too! Looking at Pokemon designs, there are plenty of ways they can shape the body that isn't that human-like... Besides, who doesn't like Fairies? ^.^

Someone once mentioned both models for micro bats and macro bats. I'm one hundred percent on board with that! For villagers, I want raccoons too (not tanuki like Nook), and lemurs (ringtailed, mongoose, black & white ruffled, etc.), and lizards would be great. Maybe tazmanian devils and seals too!
I don't feel confident that special NPC species will be villager types, but it'd be neat to have a different kind of fox model for villagers and maybe a platypus NPC.
Also, people on here have mentioned sharks before, and while I think it would be cute, I'd be annoyed if they were walking on land. Sharks have gills and can't be okay on land like an octopus can be. But the idea of shark villagers would be neat if there was a way to scuba dive to an underwater city or part of town or something along those lines.

I'd love for something that can colour change that can really go to town with the emotions. I imagine chameleons are written out as an NPC exlusive, but a squid or cuttlefish villager would be cool. Maybe with a texture like alolan Muk, as that is how some of them communicate. But I know this will just be a distant dream idea.

That sounds like it could be a lazy villager (lazy as in the personality type).
I personally want a few Pok?mon villagers, like a jock Squirtle or a peppy Bellossom.

bats and foxes would be nice, id imagine the foxes' models to look like a mix of the wolves and cats, perhaps?

Okay, this is maybe a crazy idea and some people will probably be skeptical about this
idea, however, since even the Animal Crossing movie dealt with it kinda and Gulliver also
had a UFO in the older games... How about alien villagers?
Like it says, these are villagers that have a alien/monster-ish look, maybe have some small
reference to the typical animal villagers. And unlike other villagers, these are special that
have some kind of rarity, like it's completely random when a alien villager appear in your
town. I could imagine a alien villager would crash with a spaceship/UFO in your town and
stay for a day or two till they repaired the spaceship/UFO but you can also invite them in
that time into your town.
