What's the deal with collectibles?

Are they just there to... Look pretty?
I just guess I don't understand why people would spend loads of TBT on them, when you could buy something else, like art or villagers.

Me neither. The only reason I get them is to resell the for profit. There are some collectible whores here, but I guess they don't have anything better to spend their TBT on. If you don't like art and don't play AC anymore, collectibles are your only option xD

Basically as you said, all they do is sit in your line-up and look nice. The only ones that actually serve any purpose are the add-ons, and they usually aren't giftable.

The reason why so many people are addicted and buy/sell them is because a lot of people on here don't play AC:NL anymore, or care about any art, and it gives them a reason to stay and be active in the community. When you post in certain sections of the forum, you get TBT. Obviously, you can spend this TBT on collectibles (from the shop or other people on here). A lot of them are from events and are special one-time-deals; so they're rare in the sense they won't get restocked, and only the ones in circulation are available. Those inflate like mad since there's only a limited number of those items floating around, and some can go up to 10k-30k TBT each.

TL;DR: they look nice, and give people something to do/collect so they stay active on here.
People who usually buy/sell a lot of them do it for profit (so they can then buy art/villagers), or just do it for fun.

Most people just like how they look, and I guess there's a certain rush to saving up and buying that elusive little pixel blob that you've been wanting for ages and that you know is highly sought-after on the site. ACNL is a game that naturally appeals to collectors and completionists, so it stands to reason that the concept of collectibles would excite people who are fans of the game.

I guess they also show your site experience and involvement in a way, since there are certain collectibles that are only given out during events and such. Having a little token to remember the event by is pretty cool for some people.

no but to answer the op, it's really just for collection purposes or to sell for profit. speaking of selling for profit, i'm selling my collectibl
