What's the scariest movie you've seen? TBT bonus for good recommendations ;)

The Others
Shutter (Thai ver.)

were both pretty good imo. The Others didn't really scare? me but it was really unsettling and the atmosphere was realllly creepy
Shutter had a really good ending for a horror movie lol left me very satisfied... and it was def one of the scariest horror movies I've seen.

edit/ oh Noroi and Kairo were both really creepy too, I'm not sure if you'd like them though bc both were kinda slow... both are really really atmospheric though and really diff. from other horror movies I've seen (and I've seen a lot lol).

oh and if you liked Ju-on you might like Rinne/Reincarnation, it's by the same guy who made Ju-on and I liked it for the most part.

First of all, it's really cool to encounter another Martyrs fan! That one is right up there as one of my all-time favorites. If you're into the more transgressive style of cinema, you could give The Poughkeepsie Tapes a try. It can be a bit hard to find since it was never officially released, but it's definitely worth a watch if you can get your hands on it.

Other than that, I concur with the person who recommended The Descent; I thought it was very well-done and had such an ominous vibe throughout. Although it may not the scariest movie out there per se, Scream is always a good classic. V/H/S was really cool and different and my friends and I all enjoyed it immensely, but I wouldn't recommend the follow-up titles. I may come back and edit this if I think of more, but best of luck in finding some enjoyable new titles!

Yay! Martyrs is honestly one of my favourite movies in general/across genres. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested, but just with the warning that there are a couple scenes that you need to have a strong stomach for. Although I have to say I'm one of those that wasn't crazy about the ending.

I've actually seen the Poughkeepsie tapes! I totally don't remember anything about it other than the last scene though.

Megan Is Missing isn't really horror but holy **** did it make me paranoid. It literally made me afraid to put any information online. No other movie has really scared me tbh

The only ones I can think of right now are
One missed call (there is an american and japanese version of the movie)
and Ju-On (Japanese). I couldn't sleep for awhile after seeing Ju-on tbh haha.

I'm not into horror, but I loved Tucker and Dale versus evil. The Exorcist scared the crap out of me when I was a kid ( about 5 or 6 ). I'm an adult now, and the Grudge was too much for me. I wish I had never watched it.

I can't remember the name, but it will come to me later
I just remember having a pillow in front of me the entire time to put my face into, and my mom and I calling it the "squishy movie" because the creatures looked super squishy
(I dont get scared from movies often. I was brought up watching rated R scary movies since I was 7)

Dawn of the dead (its a zombie movie) god that scared me for years.
and all of the chuckie movies (shivers) god that doll scares me so much

Normally horror movies don't get to me, but the music in Insidious paired with a couple scenes were enough to freak me out a 'lil bit.

where you see the black shape in the kitchen hiding and in the 'other' world when suddenly all their faces are there smiling at you

Honestly Insidious is the creepiest movie I've ever seen, the music and the "other side" freak me out so much.

You've probably already seen it, but the first Paranormal Activity was decently scary to me, mostly because it was kind of realistic IMO, if you believe in demons and ghosts and what not lol. Also, The Blaire Witch Project. That one was freaky.

The Babadook was pretty freaky, it still freaks my BF out to this day when I quote it, Mama was really good, it was the first movie I had seen in a long while that actually left an impact at all. Devil's Due was the most recent scary movie I saw, and it was pretty good if you don't mind the whole Mockumentary deal, honestly I am getting a little tired of it. =/

Okay, I'm not at home right now but I'm an absolute horror fan. When I'm back home I'll send you all info, collections, everything I've (by PM if you prefer).

the BaBaDook and The Shrine I wasn't scared but it scared my sister and sinister still gives me the creeps. Any of the nightmare on Elm Street &nd the evil dead original or remake is pretty good

The unborn
dark Skies was really bad and super entertaining to watch
wind chill
The uninvited
orphan
The shining

Orphan
The Descent
The Hills have Eyes
The Conjuring
Insidious 1 & 2
House of Wax

These are just a few of my favorites :)

I've to warn you that I'm really into Asian horror, since I like the atmosphere of those more than American and European horror, who I find in general more based on jumpscares than on a really good story. I can give you countless names of movies that I could recommend to you to watch, but to keep it short, here are some that I found outstandingly good. They are all movies that aren't very know like Ju-On(Grudge) or Ringu(Ring) are because I feel like I want to give you some that probably nobody recommend you before. You can download all of these movies by torrenting but most only have english subtitles due not being very known.

Gore
''Cheuuat gaawn chim'' or as English title ''The Meat Grinder''. This is a horror movie from Thailand. Without giving to much away, it's about this lady which has to make her money by selling noodles and she starts to put interesting things in the noodle soup to make it profitable and for some other reasons you will find out later. Besides amazingly good gory scenes, this movie has a key element that many other movies don't have: not saying a word about the plot. You're going to explore it yourself without any help and you will either like it or not.

Psychological message
''Jisatsu-Saakuru'' or Suicide club/Suicide circle is the best explanation I could give you about what I miss most in American and European horror movies: a message. This movie has got a lot of critic since it came out in Japan in 2001. It wouldn't make sense. There would be no meaning to it, and to be honest, I wasn't able to find it out very quickly myself either. But that didn't stop me from enjoying this movie for every single second. Maybe the sudden weird scenes and 'wtf-moments' are part of the story behind what makes this film so interesting. You will have to find that out yourself.

Insanely scary
What makes movies like Shutter (2007 Original Thailand), Alone (2007 Thailand) and Death Bell/Gosa 1 and 2 stand out is that it is besides scary still knows how to give you an interesting story. A lot of producers just by trying to make it so scary they push away the story and forget that that is what is needed for a good movie. Though if you don't like the school-horror element I recommend you not to watch Gosa, but I promise you that you're missing out on somethings. All of these 3 movies made my heart jump multiple times while a watched them and if you really want something scary than this are also movies you surely will enjoy.

Urban Legend/Folklore
If you've heard of movies like teke teke (テケテケ) then I can understand you wiped Urban/Folklore movies off your list. However, there are some really good movies even in this sub-genre. Kuchisake-Onna is about the well known slit-wouth-woman from Japan. Besides following the stories tha are written about her, this movie keeps you entertained all the way trough. And the same goed for Bunhongsin (The Red Shoes). This last one might not sounds like a folklore movie to you but it is. It's about the story of 2 red shoes (although I find them more pink than red but okay) that were left at the subway in Korea some decennia ago. Definetly some you should check out if you're not very known with the genre.

Classics
Just some extra options for some real asian horror classics that I could recommend. Ju-On shiroi-rojo, Ju-On kuroi-shojo, Ha Phraeng, Kansen, Noriko's Dinner table, Chakushin Ari, Program na winyan akat and Gin Gwai.

English
I guess I can't escape from this huh? Well there aren't a lot of American/European horror movies I like but ''Husk'' and ''The Tunnel'' are some that I surely enjoyed. I suck at giving good arguments about why I like these movies, I recommend you to just check them out yourself.

I hope I gave you enough options ^_^

The Ring

It's well known, but it has so many good qualities to it. Make sure to watch it in the dark though (if you haven't already seen it).

It's one of those horrors that doesn't solely rely on jump-scares and loud noises. It's very eerie, and gets even more scary as the story progresses. It has a couple of jumpscares, but it really isn't the scariest part. The plot just THICKENS straight down till the end, and by then you're going to be afraid to watch the screen. It has kind of a slow-build, but it has such a creepy feel; that's what is going to scare you.

One of those Life Series documentaries about the ocean we had to watch in class in middle school. It was just scary because I'm terrified of fish though, haha

The Babadook.

People don't like it, but it's because it's not a typical boring american horror movie. It's less focused on a monster, and more focused on emotions/mind states. I really recommend it, it's beautifully done

Omg yes. I saw that film the other week and loved it. It was so refreshing to see a film that doesn't rely on jump scare. I'm personally getting so sick of jump scare films because they're so repetitive and I feel like most of the time jump scares are there to distract you from the half arsed plot.

I don't know if anybody has suggested it yet (or if you are a fan of gory zombie films) but 28 Weeks Later gave me the spooks when it came out. :)

Yay! Thanks for the bumps guys <3

I've watched a few of the recommendations. I actually didn't really like The Babadook. I feel like it had potential but I didn't like that the monster was symbolic in the beginning and then became literal half way through. I felt like that was a huge flaw in the story.

Anyways please keep suggesting!

Also thanks Aestivate for the Asian horror recommendations, I'm also a huge fan of Asian movies! I've actually seen Shutter, Suicide Club and Meat Grinder, but I'll be sure to check out some of your more obscure picks!

I'm a fan of basically anything :)

I have seen both - I absolutely love 28 days later. Another one that's not really horror but I'd love to recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it is Let the Right One In. It's a vampire movie which almost made me not watch it but it's absolutely beautiful.

*Neverlake (I really like this one: it's not super scary, but it's creepy, and the ending is just awesome.)
*In Fear (Another that isn't necessarily jump-scary, but it's creepy, and I'm a big fan of Iain de Caestecker.)
*Haunter
*7 Below
*You're Next
*Another vote for Oculus. (What can I say? It's Karen Gillan.)

Can't wait to check these out too, I've already seen You're Next a couple times - one of my faves.
