What's up with all the ACNH switch "pre-orders" on E-Bay?

I think I have an idea on why this is happening. Are these scalpers?? Tons of people pre-ordered it themselves, then turned around and charged $500 for someone else to be able to get it, when they could've gotten it for $300 had the scalpers not "take up space".

EDIT: I'm not trying to buy the LE switch from E-Bay, I'm just curious as to why this is happening :)

Just ordered mine from EB Games! They told me that specific store had the most in stock than other stores in Canada and secretly told me they had below 30 of them... That is Crazy!!! And yes it costed me 460, but thats because Canadian price, suppose to be 299 for USD. They also told me if I hadn't come by tonight, it would have been out of stock.. Not to mention best buy and eb games online don't have it anymore. The only place you can get it is to wait for amazon to release it and I hope you are fast! Or line up on the day of release and hope some people didn't pick up their switch. As of this moment, they still have pre orders going on for game stop U.S.

Sorry for the extra info, didn't find a similar thread like this, for those looking into buying it. Also side note, this device released today...

I've honestly never purchased anything from Ebay that didn't arrive damaged.

You know what this makes me feel? Very angry. Not only have I had it with these scalpers, but it seems like they’re trying to take advantage of other people’s rage for anything Animal Crossing related. Them scalpers really want that cash! Just no.

The last completed auctions I saw showed a final sale of $355 with free shipping. At that cost, the seller is losing money.

since no one has answered your question as of me typing this...

it's just your average scalpers trying to turn around a quick buck by preying on people who won't be able to preorder a switch for themselves for whatever reason. the same thing happened when the original switch was in the preorder stage. in some regions it was difficult for months to get your hands on a brand new switch, even if you called and ran from store to store. people don't want to miss out. high demand, low supply.

nintendo fans are known for being ravenous about limited edition consoles, and nintendo is famous for releasing extremely limited stock and never doing rereleases. nintendo's limited/special edition consoles therefore usually sell out almost immediately. scalpers know there will be people desperate enough to buy or "preorder" these once in a lifetime consoles even with the excessive markup. as you know many people have been saving up for this very thing. but those who aren't hardcore animal crossing fans or have limited funds will likely come around late to the game. people selling secondhand know this and they use it to their advantage. even if it seems premature to put preorders on a site like ebay up a few lucky scalpers will make some money off those vulnerable and desperate buyers.

this edition also seems very popular with non animal crossing fans. i've seen people all over social media talk about how they ordered or plan to order one despite never having played animal crossing. the special edition is expected to sell out soon, and i agree because it's very unique compared to previous nintendo switch special editions. some people are going so far as to import just the joycons or the dock or joycons and dock from japan, and that exclusivity means scalpers can get away with charging even more ludicrous prices for their wares. it's a very vicious cycle that has been around for a long time.

I don't believe they're actually going to be successful at scalping this one. Wii had supply shortages but Nintendo, having learned their lesson, has been a lot better about stock with the Switch, and the days of artificial shortages with amiibo kinda over. Nintendo has no motive for keeping this special edition in short supply "only 5000 per territory" status. They will produce more if they see there's high demand and preorders are strong. They will do that because stores will say "we want to re-order x more and we will prepay for them" and Nintendo execs will be like "wait, yes, I do like money."

I'm not so sure also how badly it'll be sold out in the USA. I didn't think AC was that popular of a franchise, at least not as much as some other Nintendo properties. My experience has been that even when people go crazy over a game when it's announced and preorders are mad, I can still walk into a store and pick up a copy. I distinctly remember doing that with Skyrim back in the day even.

So I wouldn't waste my energy being angry over scalpers because it's not a sure thing that they'll be making profits here. And Nintendo is very likely to sell those joycons separately, which will be enough to satisfy many non-AC fans that they don't need to buy the whole console. The scalpers may even have to return their units to the store for refund, which means surprise stock for fans. So I would say even if the console seems sold out upon launch, you should keep checking stores for refunds from disappointed would-be scalpers.

@Jim is absolutely right about the motives and how it will probably go down. For what it's worth, I'm hoping that nintendo will have more stock this time around because of past issues with scalpers and the higher profile of animal crossing, post mobile game.

One of the PlayStation consoles sold for double when there was a shortage.
People bought two consoles and hoped to sell one for double. The other one they kept for the family.
In news articles sellers claimed it was the only way they could afford to get one for their children. Others sold them to buy Christmas presents for their children.

The limited edition Let's Go Pikachu got a restock in March 2019. It was a nice surprise for Pokemon fans. Hope Nintendo does the same for ACNH.

I'm not trying to buy from there, I'm just asking why this is happening, but thank you!

I just tried to report one and it won't let me give the specific reason. Welp!

My guess is it is for people who do not live in countries that have the pre-order for this Switch
