I have no idea whether the staff plan to bring them back or not.
If they do end up doing so, then (like I've mentioned in previous threads about this) they'll need to be made from scratch to fit in with TBT 3.0's look.
I went ahead and made a quick mockup of one style that might fit in with the site. I used the flat color and shading style used in ACNH's communication error screen, which fits right in with the flat set of default smilies. (ie. )
Unfortunately, I didn't take into account that the mockup's expression would be hard to tell at the resolution emojis/smilies are output at (the source image for all smilies is 72px, yet they're all output as 22px). The sizes I've used in my post are 100px (original size of the mockup), 44px, and 22px.
They were nice but I didn't like them appearing automatically when I did "" or whatever. But having them back as an emote that we can add would be good!
Wow, I didn't think my mockup would end up that well-liked!
Because of that, I felt like working on another set of mockups for you all:
Here's another one based on the flat style mentioned previously, but with Lloid looking like a round-headed mini gyroid.
This one kinda has the opposite problem of the previous one: It looks weird/off in its original size, but it looks alright at 44px or 22px.
The next one's an edit of the first mockup from last week. The face (I made the smile bigger/thicker) and arms are positioned at the same angle the original gyroid smilies used. I gave them a small 1px outline; it seems to help show off the gyroid's shape better. Both of these are and respectively.
