I personally enjoy better the ones in New Leaf where the one who catch the bigger fish, wins. This ones are not bad and you also get some themed items but i think i enjoy more the celebrations where Chips gave you a trophy.

I miss the New Leaf fish and bug events and the trophy ceremonies.I don't participate in the New Horizons events but I like watching the villagers give it a try.

The insects in New Horizons are visually gorgeous so the experience of catching them feels better to me, and I prefer Flick's character to Nat's. Overall I prefer the NH Bug Off. Same as the bugs, the NH models for the the fish are so beautiful so it's just a better visual experience overall than New Leaf. I would like the New Horizons fishing tourney even more if they had allowed us to craft fish bait in bulk, also the input delay on my switch in docked mode makes some fish get away too easily. NL made it feel more like you were interacting with your villagers. It's a shame they only passively participate in NH. Additionally getting the trophies from either tourney in NH is a lot more grindy as you don't get a trophy for each tourney but for reaching point milestones. I honestly don't mind either way but it's something to note.

However the thing that bothers me the most is the fish and bug furniture prizes from NL not making a return in NH. My house in NL has a room themed for each of them, the fish ones worked so well with the mermaid set so I was hoping they would eventually make a return.

Definitely NL, it felt like you were actually playing against your villagers and trying to get the biggest fish/insect, and of course, the ceremony cutscenes were really cute too. NH just feels a bit... off. You're just trying to catch a bunch of fish/bugs in a certain time, and you just get rewards based on how many you've gotten. The villagers are just there but don't actually seem to participate.

The one complaint with NL is that you could get the biggest creature in such a short amount of time and just be done, I forget if you got rewards for breaking records or just giving the judges anything. You definitely could spend an extended period of time on the tourney, I honestly did enjoy the hunt to try to catch something bigger just to finally conquer 1st place in my town, but maybe they've could've done more to make it last longer.

No competition for me. New Leaf's was better handled. New Horizon's version just felt like a re-skinned and glorified mini-game from Club Tortimer.

i prefer the bug-offs and fishing tourneys in new leaf as well. trying to catch a bigger bug/fish each time was so fun, and made earning prizes and trophies feel less like grinding and more rewarding. i also loved the little ceremony at the end where the 3 winners would be given their trophies, and i liked that it was free to participate.

I miss having my villagers participate in the tournaments. It felt a lot better to lose in NL when I knew that my virtual friends were winning. And even if you didn’t participate, life went on. Now in NH I ignore the tournaments and nobody else seems to mention them or care. They were definitely fun in the first year, and I liked that friends could come over and participate with you, but I don’t think they work as well as they could for a recurring event.

Definitely New Leaf. I always enjoyed going to the ceremonies, and seeing one of my favorite villagers get a trophy is one of my favorite feelings from that game. I quit the fishing and bug tournaments after you stopped getting nook mile achievements for them in NH, because after that it just didn’t seem worth it. I miss the villagers competing against you.

I'm gonna say NL. The Bug/Finish competition is NH is too repetitive. I don't see the fun in speed catching catching x number of fish/bugs over and over again just for points. Plus, there is a lot of dialogue to initiate each round.

I found both fun in their own ways. In terms of playability with repetition, NL wins that area.

NH tournaments were more fun as a multiplayer mode. I like a fast paced competition. Playing with friends and randoms is fun but by yourself, not that much.

NL felt good as a single player mode with your villagers competing and even being a real challenge to beat at times. There were some villagers I couldn't beat because they were blessed by the river/sea god to catch a Godzilla fish, lol.

It makes me kind of wish there would be different modes that rotated in these tournaments. I think it would've helped with the feeling of redundancy.

The competition aspect in NL was better...but I definitely don't miss the NL frequency.

I like that NH is only seasonal tourneys as opposed to monthly. The NL ones got old really fast.
