My villagers were actually chosen based on color scheme and species. I have two wolves to be the leaders of the pack, along with eight dogs. They all follow an orange-brown color scheme. I have a picture here for reference:

I love all of my villagers. I haven’t been more fond of a group of characters since the Totodile evolution line, lmao. Mac, Biskit, and Bones are Amiibos. I couldn’t care less about personalities.

These are always so hard to answer, and honestly I end up answering a little different every time. There are just soo many villagers that it is easy not to ever meet one in your game, and then you meet them later or in the next AC game and be like, man, I really like you. And some personalities have way more villagers in them than others, which makes it hard to choose just one in those.
I do feel like NL tried to close that gap a little with past villagers randomly visiting the town area, and the ACNH DLC did help with closing that gap, though it does feel distant since the activity doesn't happen on your island. I suspect the next AC game will try to close that gap even more. (And maybe update some of the villagers that have clothes/hats attached to them?)

Lazy - Moe. Special mention to Zucker and Ozzie

I liked Ozzie on my island until I realised he has a two-track mind in my game: his express track is snacks and his local track is the bugs in his house that he loves. (And I'd like to know how he thinks he's going to clean his dirt floor with a broom! I saw another NH page showing Ozzie's house having pegboard walls, tool rack, and cork flooring---but he didn't get that on my island.) Whenever I leave his house after visiting him, I'm never sure whether I need to give him a diet book or a can of Raid on my next visit.

Smug - Zell. Special mention to Curlos

I have Curlos. He's actually quite generous and friendly, even if he is obsessed with his own brand. And any sheep who's got a full drum kit and what looks like a Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar in his house can't be all that bad!

Kiki is on my NH island. She's really an angel. One day I inadvertently whacked a tree next to my flower garden and out came the wasps. I couldn't grab my net in time and I got stung en masse. Kiki was right next to the tree when it happened and she teared up and handed me medicine post haste. That's what I call a friend!

Big sister/uchi: oh, there's so many. Hazel, the one I have, was my starter and she's so cute. Then probably Ursala, Reneigh, and Cherry.
Jock: Teddy, my starter (who I still have), I literally love. And Dom, who is the cutest sheep in existence.
Peppy: definitely my girls Bunnie and Ruby. I have both their amiibos, and I guard them with my life. I also have Flora, but she's not a dreamie.
Lazy: uhm... probably Sherb, but right now I have Lucky, who is my brother's dreamie and I don't care that much about Sherb, I like Lucky, too.
Sweet: this is really hard. I love so many of them. For the sweet villager on my island, I want them to lead a farm with Hazel, so I am looking for cottage core villagers. I really like June, but she doesn't fit the theme, for example. My favorite cottagecore sweet villager is Maple.
Smug: I've had a really bad history with these guys. First, I got Keaton, who looks like a high school popular guy. Then I got Ken, which is who I have now. But my dreamies are Zell, Henry, Kidd and Shep, just to name a few.
Snooty: I really like Cleo and Judy, but I'll have either because I have Blanche and she's in charge of my bamboo forest and I can't let her leave, sadly.
Cranky: for this personality, I don't really have a dreamie. I like Murphy for his adorable catchphrase, "malarkey!" but I have Rolf, and he's just amazing, plus, I gave him sunglasses and he's just adorable, so...I'm not letting him go.
Wow, that was a lot! My overall favorite villagers are Bunnie and Ruby.
