My first game in the series was the GameCube game back in 2002 and I've always been fond of the gyroids. There are quite a few sets of the older style of gyroids that I like: the Bowtoids, Brewstoids, Clankoids, Dingloids, Dinkoids, Drilloids, Freakoids, Howloids, Lamentoids, Lullaboids, Metatoids, Nebuloids, Percoloids, Poltergoids, Rustoids, and Sputnoids.
My particular favorites are the Freakoids, Howloids and Poltergoids.
I'm glad to see gyroids return and I do like the way these new ones happen to look, but I hope that classic gyroid styles return as well and that they're of various sizes like they always have been, instead of all just in this smaller style.
As for complaints throughout the thread of the classic style gyroids being creepy, I've never found them to be creepy but more just unique and cool. Heck, my favorites are probably the ones that people would find the creepiest, so it is in fact a positive aspect for me. Also, considering that gyroids in general and the villager Coco are all based on haniwa, funerary dolls from 3rd-6th century Japan, it seems fitting that they be a little off-putting. Haniwa were buried with the dead, that's why gyroids are underground and we dig them up!
