Why are similar villagers on such different levels of popularity?

Freya (left) VS Whitney (right)

Also The pastel pink wolf is less popular than the white one. I'm actually shocked.

To me the main difference is fur colour.

Anyone have some really good examples?

I'd love to see posts of Tier 3-5 villager pics who have an equivalent in the 1st & 2nd Tiers.

The wider the Tier gap & the similarity the better. :)

Whitney was in the film, so she's more popular :). I've always thought Celia and Apollo are similar despite their different genders, but obviously Celia is less popular than him.

They are the same species, but at least different genders as you say & personalities as Ceila is not cranky.

I thought Whitney was popular because of the way she is portrayed in the film as incredibly elegant. But in reality Freya is her equal.

I just would like to see how many lower tiers villagers could actually equal the "higher" tiers ones---maybe people are paying millions of bells for a villager to move in, when they could have a very similar experience with a tier 4 or 5 who was simply overlooked.

I mean how cool would it be to essentially create a list with pictures here in this very thread of tier 3-5 villagers who are the equivalent of the tier 1-2 villagers....so people who aren't fooled by such things could save a lot of bells.

Well the main reason is personality. As someone brought up with Celia and Apollo, theyre very similar, but Apollo wins out due to personality.

There's also the film, which explains Whitney. I also think some people find white more attractive than Pink.

Some other villagers have fame due to LPs (Shari was Tier 4 for a little while due to Chuggaaconroy's LP. I don't know if Molly's claim to fame was due to that as well). So some very similar villagers may lose spotlight because their twins received some extra attention.

There are many reasons. Sometimes the name may be more appealing. Maybe their house is nicer. I think in Whitney's case it was just a mix of the film, her color, and receiving just a little extra spotlight that Freya missed, which makes Whitney the "superior" snooty when people are deciding between the two.

I feel Freya would be more popular if she were a different personality, just to eliminate some competition. I'd imagine she'd be more highly sought after if she were, say, the lone wolf Uchi. Not saying she SHOULD be, but just speculating.

But despite this, I see the animals as unique, so even if they're similar I don't consider the lower tiers to be the "bargain bin" versions of tier 1's. Freya has a different air about her compared to Whitney, and their eyes are just different enough that Whitney gives off more of an "attitude" compared to Freya. Small and subtle differences, but differences nonetheless.

I think Freya is unpopular because she has tons of makeup on. A lot of people don't like excessive makeup on villagers, myself included. I personally think that Freya looks absolutely awful.

I've always wondered why Lolly is more popular than Mitzi. They're both normal cats and Mitzi is such a classic villager. Same with Goldie and Daisy. People prefer Goldie but I can't really see why. They're almost the same villager to me.

Not true. Look at all the threads people respond to about the personalities they like and dislike. People care a lot :P

There are many villagers people would probably like more if they didn't have the almost universally hated jock personality, or the put-offish snooty personality. Many people, myself included, actually prefer certain animals because the way they act can seem a bit unique or endearing depending on nostalgia, experiences, and the like.

Also I didn't even notice Freya's makeup now that someone mentioned it. Lol.

But yeah. Personality does play a big role. Looks do too. But you can't deny personality does indeed factor in.

One thing I've picked up on this: Taken from the same Villager Personality Category, if you two in your town whose very own persona are alike, it can feel like you merged two villagers into one. Using Merengue and Tia, both Normals, as an example: They're very sweet and bubbly. If you have them in the same town, it can feel like you're running into the same villager. (Visually, no. Persona wise, yes.) I have three active towns, plus one I'm using loosely on a fourth cartridge, and have picked up on not having pairs who are very alike in the same town. So, as another example of a different pair, it's good that I don't have Normals Jambette and Molly in the same town.

Merengue and Rhonda are good examples of this. They're both normal rhinos but Merengue is wildly popular while Rhonda barely gets noticed.

There's other examples like the smug horse trio of Julian/Colton/Ed.Julian is far more popular because he's patterned after a unicorn while the other two are just nicely dressed horses with good manners.Having a more unique design makes a villager more popular.

In my opinion it is only because Whitney looks better. The white is quite cute and elegant and she's pretty simple looking. Freya on the other hand...I don't know, I just don't really like the yellow eyes and the blue eye shadow. It's not as cute.

How about the peppy cats Rosie is in tier one I believe while Merry is tier four and tends to be overlooked.

There s also Ed and Julian. They're both blue smug horses but Ed is tier 5 and Julian is tier 2.

How is it sad?
I do not want to load up my town everyday and see Pietro or Wart Jr, or Zucker...
They just don't appeal to me and that's my honest opinion.

Heck I sometimes don't even find time to talk to half of my villagers, why would personality matter?
In real life and ACNL, personality matters. But so does appearance.

Edit: This would make sense if they were actually similar. Freya doesn't look like Whitney. Merry does not look like Rosie. Ed and Julian look different. I don't really understand it.

Sadly, that's true. Appearance does matter in the real world, and it does in AC too. I got rid of Quillson because of his looks. I can understand Quillson hate because he's just.. urrrrgggghhh

I love Daisy and have no real opinion on Goldie, it probably does just come down to personal experience with the villagers and other factors like LPers or friends that love the villager and so on. It only takes small things to make you like or dislike something. So, the fact Freya is heavier with her make up is off-putting for a lot of people.

I agree. To me, in this game looks are everything when it comes to villagers. I want cute/cool looking villagers in my town.

They don't look similar at all. With that logic, you could say every female cat looks the same just because they are all female cats.

I'm not saying this at all. "bargain bin" I really dislike the obsession with top tier villagers, so what I'm actually trying to do is get people to value some of the lower tiers ones----and to establish value with people that only care about rankings, you have to first remind them that the so called lower-tiered villagers actually have a lot in common with the ones they put on a pedastool.

It's just a way to draw attention to some really beautiful & overlooked villagers.

I agree. Some people do care about personality umbrellas (the main 8) but the individual differences...not that much.

I also think "pretty" (I do think Ankha is beautiful, but in quotations as beauty is subjective) villagers like Ankha would be just as popular no matter if she were snooty, nice etc...most people say they like a villager for the design & furniture in the house.

I personally don't like that way of thinking, but I noticed that thinking is quite common.

At least I like when someone has the honesty to admit they just like the aesthetics, it's not ideal but at least they know themselves & I appreciate the honesty.
