Would Nintendo dominate the console gaming market if they just built a machine that was powerful enough to play all third party games without having to compromise on frame rate or graphics, etc? I think that if they created a Nintendo console that had the same power as Sony/Xbox consoles, there would almost be no need for Playstation or Xbox because one console will have all the exclusive Nintendo titles, PLUS most games that would come out for those other consoles. I feel like Nintendo would eliminate all competition if they just made use of the technology that exists.. so how come they haven't done it? I've been told that it's because they make money this way but.. they'd make more if they were at the top of the console gaming industry.. so why not? Am I wrong? Is it not as simple as this?

I doubt they will. Even if they do catch up on hardware, they’re still behind on many things Sony and Microsoft have (achievements being one of them). Also, because they have been alienating third party developers for too long, there’s no way they can dominate the gaming industry.

If they caught up on implementing achievements and all that stuff that Sony and Microsoft have as well, wouldn't that at least give them a leg up? I don't mean that it would be instantaneous but it would lead to being the top wouldn't it? I guess I'm ignorant to this, but may I ask how they've been alienating third party devs? I thought the only reason they don't much third party support is because their hardware/system was very hard to develop/optimize for because the tech was just so behind and their games would either look bad or not run well.

no, they've been practically a niche market ever since the wii, and they'd never get the AAA support that drives people to the other 2 consoles

I think they should keep focusing on producing titles for their big IPs. Even if they did make a system powerful enough for most third party games, there's still the issue with the terrible online service. No messaging system, invite system, party chat is inconvenient, no established servers... the list goes on. They don't really have a Game Pass or PS+ type of membership either. I also don't see myself using their Joy Con controller in a lot of big titles. Maybe the Pro controller, but the Joy Cons feel very small in my hands as well as their well-known drift issues. Their creativity is what's gotten them this far. I love the portability of the Switch even if it's less powerful. Being able to play it portably or in TV mode is really awesome and something you can't do with other consoles.

I think Nintendo once stated they like the spot they exist in. It offers them access to both Sony's and Microsoft's customers. They see it as an opportunity to give us games both bigger companies wouldn't do or work on.

Something to play with friends or on the go and have single handedly dominated the market in that area. No other handheld survived against Nintendo. The gamegear, the psp, the mobile gaming industry(still alive unfortunately). None of them affect their bottom line.

Nintendo may not be up to snuff on Internet infrastructure or achievements. But they know what games we want to play pretty well~

I think all 3 exist as a good balance to eachother. Competition breeds innovation.

It goes back longer than that. Nintendo has been their own thing since Nintendo 64, because they started alienating certain 3rd party developers. The last time they were more competitive with the other consoles and not doing their own thing was the SNES.

Nintendo hasn’t done that because they don’t have to. They don’t need great graphics to make great games, and they are not really directly competing with Sony and Xbox; the Switch is VERY different. And now PS5 and Xbox Series X are going to cost more, and eventually, consoles like those will be obsolete, because aside from exclusives, they’re cheaper PCs with some exclusives (except Xbox) without allowing to upgrade SSD or anything.

Nintendo is doing it right. They have so many exclusives, and a Hybrid System is so different from what’s out there that they may be the only one with a console left down the line. BUT, they need to fix the common issues that other platforms have excelled at. Proper online capabilities and proper JOY-STICKS should be a must at this point.

No, if the Nintendo Switch was just a normal 4th system it wouldn't have been as successful.

Sony is becoming known for odd new censorship practices.

I'm convinced that a big part of their success with the Switch is its form factor and unique hardware.

If they're gonna pursue power it would most likely just turn the hardware into a stationary rectangular box shape again.

I think Nintendo has a specific niche it likes to fill where literally anybody can pick up one of their consoles and enjoy a high quality and family friendly game on it. Nintendo’s power is more in its characters like Mario and Link.

If Nintendo had a more powerful console that could compete with Xbox and Playstation, I feel like it would have a hard time appearing as a unique console that many people buy alongside other consoles, and instead just another choice of 3 mediocre gaming platforms.

I feel like Nintendo sells because of its games library though. Nintendo games are so unique compared to Sony and Microsoft. I just think if Nintendo came out with a console with all their games PLUS pretty much the entire library of PS4 and Xbox, it would be killer. Maybe it's just a dream for me then lol. I just don't like seeing people put down Nintendo just cuz they can't "compete" really :( Nintendo is still my favourite, with Sony coming second. But I could never ever give up my Nintendo games

Yeah, I know what you’re saying. What I mean is that currently people will often buy a Switch alongside their PS4s or Xbox’s, so if it was too similar to these other consoles I’m afraid it wouldn’t be unique enough to justify the purchase. I could be completely wrong but I think Nintendo filling the niche/gimmicky console types is just part of their identity and losing that could be detrimental to their image.

Definitely not... What about the Xbox (they're a bit weaker on this front but there are lots of people who like Halo and Gears of War) and Playstation (God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Persona 5, The Last of Us to name a few) exclusives? The thing about Nintendo games is nostalgia and strong IPs rather than uniqueness. Ultimately, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony are all going in different directions which is healthy for the gaming industry imo.

I guess the dream would be to have all those exclusives jump ship and go to Nintendo XD Yeah that's unrealistic. I just assumed if they ended up at the top, they'd earn the rights to more of those exclusives since more people would want their game to be on the all in one console. I never said this idea was realistic but it's something I think about sometimes. I just always thought it wasn't too unbelievable but I guess it is hehe 😅

The nintendo fan base is mostly set, most nintendo fans will just buy the newest stuff even if it lacks a little bit of power, there are tons of great exclusive games like Animal crossing, great mario games like odyssey, mario maker and even breath of the wild. These games still look extremely good, some of the other third party games comparatively look worse than ps4/xbox 1 but it isn't that that much more of a difference in performance and graphics for most games. Nintendo always has their little quirky things like 3D, gamepad and now this portability and joycon thing.
