How do you make shiny looking stuff in sai? Like when people highlight hair and eyes. All I can do is make it look bland and boring.

If you go into the 'mode' setting that's on top of the layers, there is a setting called 'Luminosity', and it makes whatever colour you are using bright and shiny! Hope this helps. ^_^

This is one option. You can also change the color up a bit to get a slightly different effect.

You just move up the color wheel a little and add a little white.

So for example: you want to make the color orange look brighter. Move the color wheel towards yellow and add some white.

Ok, how about shading?

whipped this up really quick (this guide DOES assume you are using SAI, but it's kinda the same in other programs like FireAlpaca.) o yeah, this is more for cell shading than soft but if you have a good smoothing/colorless blending tool you can easily make it soft shaded :]
I'm not a wonderful artist myself, so feel free to experiment and find what you like best. gl~

oh yes, and no question is stupid. If it helps you learn, ask any question you need to.

Honestly, this would be a lot easier if you gave an example of your work.

Easiest way to make something shiny is to experiment with complementary colors. For example, if I were to color something purple, I would highlight with orange if I wanted that effect. If I wanted to be a little more subtle, I would highlight with something analogous to orange like yellow or a light shade of red.
