I believe it's something they have to do to determine the problem, though I'm not entirely sure about that.

What's really annoying about this fact is, if you lose your data, most likely through corruption or deletion, you have to start ALL over again. WHY IS THERE NO WAY TO BACKUP SAVES FOR A GAME THAT PEOPLE CAN PUT MONTHS OF WORK INTO!? ('cept for the things other users have stated)

Yeah, I noticed that. It really bothers me because I wanted a copy of each of my saved games just in case my brother gets into my Wii and deletes all my saved games like he did with my PS2!

Anyways you can copy the data that is if you use the Homebrew (I know hacking discussion isn't allowed.) and use the sources on Homebrew. But the reason they block a lot of games from not being saved from the SD is that it is very easy to modify the copy and get you 99.999.99.99 bells and everything in the game. It would ruin the game and everybody would have every item. Besides upcoming DLC.
