honestly? if i had cancer or something and the treatment wasnt going to work id just die. i dont want to suffer, and im sure other poeple would feel the same. id rather not get to the point where i rely on others to do everything for me.

I don't have a problem with a person choosing to die in a peaceful way instead of a slow and painful way. The one problem I have with making assisted suicide legal is that terminally ill people may be pressured by doctors and other people to choose assisted suicide over dying naturally for financial reasons which would be totally unethical but difficult to prosecute.

i saw a movie about this a while back and it DESTROYED me
but yeah honestly if they're stable enough to make this decision and if they were predicted to never get better, it's best to let them decide on their own life.
if i were extremely sick i'd want people to respect that. if i had any potential to get better though i'd still want to stick around.

Honestly I think people with a terminal illness should be allowed to have the option of an assisted suicide... However it should not be a decision made lightly, any sort of suicide is a tragedy.

With a terminal illness, yes I think it's fine. My great aunt suffered a lot from Alzheimer's before she died and I think it may have been better for her to go peacefully then for her to have deteriorated the way she sadly did.

For wanting to commit suicide for other reasons, I believe strict mental evaluations should be taken. If that person in no way can be helped through therapy and things of the sort, then I think it should be allowed. It's your life, however decide what you want to do with it wisely first.

after watching "me before you," i agree with it. in the context of the movie, he wasn't happy with being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. he chose to die himself, and his family just wanted a couple months of happiness with him. it was his choice to end his life, because he was extremely unhappy. even when a girl tries hard to cheer him up, he is still unhappy. i think that's where someone would want to die. it is ultimately their choice. albeit, if a person does not have a terminal illness, anything like being condemned in a wheelchair, and they're just facing a tough time in their life, i don't believe they should try to suicide. i believe if they have a terminal illness or they're bound to a wheelchair for good, or something along those lines, there is no way that it can be reversed or changed for the better. unless technology takes a leap, it's impossible to get better or change your life by then. if you are facing a big problem and you want to get out of it, or you have depression and you can't find a reason to live, don't do it. there is always going to be a better way out. it might be a tough road, but there will always be a way out.

tl;dr: i agree with assisted suicide if the person has an irreversible handicap if they want to. i disagree if they can change their life. it depends on the person's view of life, but if you're condemned, i understand if they want to end their life rather than rot on Earth.

Yes, I agree that it should be legal.

Unpopular opinion. I believe those who are mentally ill should be given the fair choice of doctor assisted suicide. I know that I will be blasted for this but living with a mental illness that you are never going to outrun, where its effecting your ability to function as a person, and thats what you want, I think it should be a right.

i voted i disagree but i'm not rly . uh . 100% set. if somone has a disease that will lead to death i don't really see any reason to why they should not be allowed to be put out in a way that will make them suffer less.

but as for the kind thst's legal in switzerland (i think????? sorry if imm wrong) where anyone can b like Yo I Wanna Die that's ihb.,,. i just think that will lead to more death bc of mental illness and that's not rly desireable.
while it ofc is better to have simeone die under control w/o making a mess rather than having them be run over by a train and messing stuff up, it's not a good idea imo to give ppl the chance to commit suicide. imo that's just like sayinh "eh we've given up on u all so u can commit suicide instead :^p "

Still reeling after reading the comment on how suicide is supposedly immoral.

Anyway, I completely agree that it should be legalised everywhere. We do not allow animals to suffer, why do we allow that for human beings? Watching somebody you love wasting away before you is devastating. Whether they have dementia or cancer or if they just have no quality of life.
Therapy does not help everybody, not everybody is the same.
If I get to the point where my organs completely fail me I would seriously consider going to Switzerland to end my life there. My condition is life limiting as it is, but I don't want to end up suffering as I get to that point. Yes it would hurt the people around me, but I know from experience it would hurt them even more to see me dying in front of them. Can remember my dad being a shell of his former self and just praying for it to be over as it was devastating to watch.

I agree with it. I watched both of my grandparents go through extreme pain in their last days. They apparently weren't really even conscious to understand it, but they were still in such extreme pain that they were screaming. I couldn't take it. I can't even fathom what kind of pain they must be feeling, and to not even be able to really see or hear anymore. It's awful.

No one should be forced to go through that. Now, I'm of the position that the law should not be able to force someone to live, period. However, especially when it comes to terms of terminal illnesses, or extreme situations where someone isn't terminally ill but is very incapacitated, there should be no argument. It's not selfish or wrong for that person to not want to have to suffer anymore. It's selfish for family/lovers/friends/etc. to keep them alive.

I saw my sister condemning a woman (probably around my age or in her 30s, I do not remember) who was terminally ill for choosing not to suffer through the pain, and I could not believe it. My sister was there to see my grandma and grandpa die. It's so inhumane to expect someone to go through that when they can choose not to.

I don't understand why so many people that are pro-abortion are against assisted suicide. My opinion is that if the child should die, they should be able to choose for themselves.

If the only thing that the person is going to get out of living slightly longer is more pain, more sadness, losing their dignity, etc, then I think that they should be allowed to.

I have mixed feelings on the part about mental stability and getting family involved, I mean, what if someone is mentally unstable but still does have genuine reasons, and what if they have an abusive or uncaring family? While I luckily don't have to apply assisted suicide to my life as I have no terminal illnesses, I'm still pretty mentally unstable and apart from my Mom and some very far away relatives, 99% of my family is either abusive or else at least doesn't have morals and opinions and attitudes that align with mine, I think that getting the family involved in someones life like that takes a gamble on whether or not they have a good family.

what does euthanasia have to do with abortion .........

i'm against assisted suicide when it is not because of a disease that will lead to death (like in cases with mental illness) because it would only make it easier for mentally ill people to kill themselves. that's not what humanity, as a whole, should want. instead of helping people commit suicide it's much better to get them help :')
i'm not saying people aren't allowed to commit suicide. it is tragic that people do attempt suicide, but i'm not saying that it is evil or should be made illegal or anything.

all i'm saying is that if the government would be like "yo u all mentally ill peeps who want 2 die hmu :^p" then it would basically encourage people to commit suicide. if it is harder to kill yourself some people will be stopped.

people shouldn't have to suffer through life. but they should get help (therapy and stuff), not offered a chance to die. obviously people will keep committing suicide either way, but i think the suicide rates would go up if you could get assisted suicide .

If you or someone you love has a terminal illness, is in agony and their quality of life isn't there, why make them prolong their suffering? Especially when they themselves are in a stable state of mind and are making the decisions for themselves. When someone is begging for death, wouldn't you think that that is their last resort and measure?

If it was one of my loved ones, if they begged me to take them to a physician that would help them with physician assisted suicide, that they no longer wanted to continue living a miserable existence in pain, I would do it for them. I would be much more at ease knowing that they finally rested in peace and not in suffering till their last drawn breath, and I know that they would feel that same way too.

It's their body, they should be able to do what they want with it.

Or does that only work in the abortion argument? Oh well.

May I ask why? Its known now that a person will never overcome mental illnesses, especially those with more extreme cases of schizophrenia or psychosis. A lot of drugs out there for mental illnesses are very heavy sedater so if a person living with mental illness comes to the point of having no quality of life at all, and would like to end that suffering, why not?

there are plenty of mental illnesses that cannot be cured through therapy or medication. people with borderline are turned away by psychiatrists because they are deemed too hard to treat / lost causes. people with schizophrenia and psychosis not only struggle with a debilitating illness but also persecuted by society

if people want to commit suicide they'll find a way, whether it's legal or illegal, whether it's assisted or not. euthanasia would just give them the opportunity to do it in a less painful way, and feel validated in their struggle, rather than feeling like their illness is less valid than a physical illness (which is how society treats mental illness anyway)
