After the next update, do you think New Horizons will ever have more or the same amount of content New Leaf had?

I think it's too soon to tell, but I feel like ACNH will have a bit more, or be even at the very least. We don't know what furniture sets will be returning, but it looks like several of the old sets will be. We will still be missing out on multiplayer games, but we have terraforming, and we will have HHD stuff if we buy the DLC.

Actually, to be honest I don't think that it has the same amount of content as NL / previous titles precisely because of the things you listed below with furniture/special NPCs/upgrades/unlocks and other "progression" aspects of the game. The original purpose of the game was a sort of socialization-centered, slice-of-life progression. NH did indeed add a handful of things. Namely terraforming, which is certainly unique and meaty as far as features go and has led to many beautiful usages, though it might not be everyone's cup of tea and seems to lend us the power to micromanage each and every detail of our island which was never really the point of previous games. Crafting too, and being able to villager "hunt" of course, placing things outside.

But many older players still feel like the game is severely lacking because it seemed to REPLACE all of the unique facets of the game that they particularly enjoyed, rather than enhancing them. The game would've felt not only equal to past titles but extraordinarily ahead of them if it had had these features IN ADDITION TO all of the unique and staple NPCs (the pelicans for instance, the police dogs, Tortimer/Kappn/Brewster/etc), the older distinct features like gyroids and et cetera, the robust socialization aspect (socialization is certainly a BIG problem in ACNH, seeing that the villager dialogue isn't too diversified and the personalities have been extremely watered down) and the unlocks. Sure, there's a few "unlocks" still in the game, but they aren't very hard to overcome. Progression-based gameplay seems to be cut short in the game. We don't even have the ability to upsize the outer rooms of our home.

The vital and detrimental mistake that Nintendo made that rightfully left a bad taste in so many people's mouths is they thought that these new features could REPLACE the unique staple features/characters/functions that made so many of those people fall in love with the AC franchise to begin with. They are fine features, Minecraft and Sims-esque or not, but they should've enhanced the game experience rather than serving as a replacement.

The update will hopefully bring it up to speed as far as the older and widely beloved features go. Unfortunately many things still seem to have been left behind or rejected from the title. For many older players and for those who are moreso fans of the original aspects of AC rather than the new design/customization aspects, this is a bit of a disappointment and in my opinion a very understandable one.
This doesn't sound so much an argument for the game lacking content. But an argument that the game lacks content that you personally would have wanted to see.

Of course it's fine to not like what this game offers as much as other titles. I just don't think that's the same thing as having less content.

I think so overall, but maybe not comparable furniture still. I wish New Horizons had anywhere near the amount of furniture that New Leaf or Pocket Camp does...

NH will near and likely even surpass the amount of NL furniture after the update. In the trailer alone there is already 300 new items. I think it’s fair to assume there will be at least double or triple that in the full release.

They're completely different, but I would say that it's important to remember that New Horizons has recreated and reimagined many features from the ground up, and not only that completely redesigned item sets, created tonnes of new ones - look at the Gyroids, for example. They could have very easily just done what they have been doing up until now, which is porting over the existing components from previous games and upscaling them - then we would probably have a game that is essentially New Leaf HD for the Switch, but is that really what people wanted? My frustration up until now has been the poor communication from Nintendo, which led many including myself to wonder if they had just given up on the game, despite it selling over 33 million copies. Thankfully, this 2.0 update delivers almost everything I want, and absolutely blew my expectations away - far more so than if we had just gotten essentially an updated port of New Leaf ever would have.

Idk I really didn’t played New Leaf as much as I’m playing New Horizons. Honestly I think we’re totally even in the items department. However, everyone has their own opinions and I’m just going to leave it at that.

New Horizons unfortunately has less than half of the furniture sets New Leaf had and basically zero multiplayer content, you just visit other people's islands and that's it.

In New Leaf you could visit Tortimer's Island with your friends and play A LOT of minigames. I wish we could take our friends to Harvey's Island but we can't even do that in NH.

In my opinion is to early to compare, as we can justify by watching Nintendo Direct. Let's play and then compare new / old content.

We will have to wait for the update to determine this. I’m sure a bunch of new stuff is added that wasn’t even mentioned.

my main concern is lack of multiplayer, I hope mini games are introduced and club LOL (that was so fun)

I also really hoped for another nooks cranny update. I’m used to it expanding more and the current model is so boring and lifeless, they could really do a lot more with it but I’m losing hope that it'll ever update again.

I think it will be about equal, but it doesn't really matter to me if New Horizons has more or not since the quality of the graphics in the game is so much better. When I'm playing in console mode, it feels like an animated interactive movie.

For me personally it'll be about enjoying what we do get. It also helps that I never played NL, but I have a few friends who make NL sound like it was a pretty godly experience that'll be hard to top. A few of them quit NH a few months after launch because NL was just that good apparently. Others have just accepted things for what they are and still play NH every now and again, and plan to return for the update. It sounds as if a few things will be missing from NL, but NH has certainly pushed back with some clever new things and polish that'll be added with 2.0, so we'll see how everyone takes to it all once the hype dies down.

I'm just glad that the game has more or less been rejuvenated for so many folks in light of 2.0!

I know a lot of people complained about the lack of content, but New Horizons did have a sturdy start with the new features it added to the series - outdoor furniture, terraforming and crafting. These features made me have the most fun with an Animal Crossing game in a long time. While I was disappointed by the paltry amount of furniture, I did play this AC game after launch longer than NL.

So... really, this update and DLC just makes a great game even greater.

Was the amount of new furniture mentioned in the trailer? I must have missed it.

The number wasn’t mentioned in the trailer but people have been combing through every screen of the direct and have identified about 300 new items. There is a video on Crossing Channel showcasing all the items that were found.

Does anyone know the number for the update without the DLC?

Okay apparently there is some worry and concern about this update so let me just give my two cents. First things first. This game New Horizons is way different compared to New Leaf. Since then many people have debated weather New Leaf was a much better game than New Horizons. This is like comparing apples to oranges. New Leaf is basically you being the Mayor building the community whereas New Horizons was all about building your own island and being creative. Both games have their strengths and weaknesses.

However, I am starting to realize that most of the content that is in New Horizons is nothing really new. New players won't understand this but most diehard AC fans would understand that most of the content that was missing were from older AC games. For example Swimming/Diving wasn't in the game from day one last year but around June 2020 is when they added it back in along with the Dream Suite. It was acted like it was a new thing but in reality it wasn't. Fast forward to 2021 when we got the big update. A lot of the content that we see is returning NPCs and many furniture sets that were in past AC games.

Happy Home Paradise is basically a new and improved Happy Home Designer from 3DS, but it seems to be improved and it does have some new features like for example the Room mate idea. If you look at it from a diehard AC Fan's Perspective you may know a lot of the returning items and features that you remember from and its nothing new to you, but if you look at it from a New Player's Perspective they are more surprised about all of this new content and they have never played the old AC games so its new to them, therefore, making it more exciting.

In Conclusion. I feel like this update that is coming up is going to have a lot more to it than what we are shown in the direct. It will be very interesting to see where this game goes from here leading into 2022 and it is unknown what Nintendo plans on doing going forward with Animal Crossing in general, from all we know they still said they will support the game with small changes/updates, but for now thats all there is.

Since none of the new furniture will be locked behind the DLC, I assume the number would be the same.
And lets not forget that since Reese and Cyrus are returning on Harvs island and the fact that Cyrus can now customize furniture for you we no longer have to worry about "Color/Variant" being locked.

Besides minor things, mini-mechanics and more varied dialogue. New Horizons is literally getting a spin-off game get added into the main game, on top of all the base game DLC.

New Horizons definitely is the bigger game.

And the version we were playing was basically the BETA version. I know thats like a running meme I see on Twitter.

I've been content with and have enjoyed New Horizons immensely, but there is another universe where the games were postponned to 2021 and 2.0 was just the base game.

I feel like it's comparable or more. Both games have features the other doesn't. It's totally fine to prefer NL (or any other game of the series), but after 2.0, I think the discussion becomes more about the the type of content rather than the amount of content.
