Animal Crossing New Horizons is Now the Second Best Selling Game on the Switch

I have mixed feelings. I am happy about the success since I love the game and series so much. But some of their decisions like waiting to fix issues right before the amiibo cards are released instead of fixing it right away, bothers me very much. I can’t turn a blind eye from that. I still am a concerned about the lack of furniture at the half a year since its release mark. I know that I should move on from that and I’d like to to; it is difficult because I have OCD and no that is not an excuse. I don’t choose to be anxious or unhappy; it just happens. I like companies that don’t openly show they are trying to milk their customers of every penny. I like companies that acknowledge their mistakes right away, communicates with fans and fix them early before the problem is exploited.I cannot respect companies that knows about something that wasn’t intended to work a certain way in the game, but they let it sit there and let people exploit it until they see when they can make an extra profit from taking it away.

I also am bothered by the sellers on Amazon hiking the price from $59.99 to $79.99 (this was in May). i found one for regular price but the case was in Italian; everything else is in the right language though. I don’t think this had anything to do with them, but still bothers me to see the price skyrocketing because of the pandemic

sorry if i offended anyone. not feeling real good today and am a bit crabby.

The lack of furniture really annoys me as well so much so I had to get rid of my pocket camp app as I hated seeing all the lovely and amazing furniture you could get especially some of the amazing fortune cookie furniture prizes. It makes me sad cause I just want items like that to be around my island :(

I know this will never happen, and it might be bad for business. But imagine having to earn some kind of token through grind/event to transfer furniture/items that don't exist in AC:NH.

this is amazing news and I genuinely hope it prompts Nintendo to release more animal crossing merch in North America/Europe and beyond.

I am proud of the game selling heaps of copies. A lot of people I know IRL who have never played games or pick up a controller or a handheld console in their life got animal crossing and a switch just to play it and adore the franchise.

Wow I wasn't expecting it to beat out Smash Bros. I imagine the pandemic is probably responsible for it, but it's a pleasant surprise since most AC games have been pretty niche (NL was the most popular AC game before this, and NH's popularity blows it out of the water). Like others, I hope exceeding the sales expectations encourages them to do more updates since they're reaching a wider audience than anticipated. Maybe they'll also do more amiibo card restocks, since the first batch seems to have sold out quickly.

I'm more surprised about Zelda not being in the Top 3. But I'm glad the game is successful.
BotW is easily the most intimidating Zelda game. While it is a very good game, a lot of people probably noped out after hearing the concept of a fully open-world Zelda. There were always going to be people who enjoyed the "3 baby dungeons -> big plot twist -> 5/6 big dungeons" setup that weren't going to be on board with a fairly directionless game where the dungeons are all basically optional.

I would be happy for something to happen like that kind of like the crystal hearts we got to collect to gather wedding furniture. Something fun like that having to collect tokens to get amazing new furniture would be fun and would probably bring back more people to the game/ play the game for longer sessions.

I’m happy the game is doing so well. Been a fan of animal crossing for well over a decade

Yup I 100% feel this too. Going forward we can only hope that the creators will listen to our concerns as players more now that there are more people playing the game. It's hard though because they know people will most likely continue to buy these games out of nostalgia even if the game sucks, and they will still make money.

I have spent over 300 hours on this game! Even more than Fire Emblem and i'm still entertained!

I added sales numbers to the first post of the other games in the series so you can see just much sales have taken off with New Horizons.

I'm glad the game is getting more coverage to, but I'm also mixed on it. For all of the reasons you stated, as well. The game is 8 months in and we're still waiting on the Roost and many other things. I'm glad for their success and for everyone being happy, but I just don't want this to become the image of AnimalCrossing where we're forced to wait a year for things to come.

I would say it helped, but didn't it get a lot of hype prior to it?
The shut down definitely boosted the numbers far larger than it would had. There isn't any denying that. And media coverage helped a lot to. They never really promoted the other games correctly or used social media to spread it. I didn't even know NL allowed you to become the mayor and rule the town the way you wanted to until I saw a commercial like year-1/2 year later on Disney XD.

I'm glad the game has become so popular. It's one of my top two favorite games to play next to Pokémon. I'm very thankful my old best friend introduced it to me years ago. 🙂

Agreed! I was a little vague about this, but I mentioned it prior to my comment. My mistake if it sounded like I wasn't fully aware!

No you're good. I was just putting my own two cents in and that when you think about it, Nintendo hasn't really taken advantage of the whole social media craze until now. Nor have I noticed many commercials for their previous systems or the early switch games.
