I've heard from a few sources that the net smacking doesn't actually work? And outside of amiibo cards (which I can't currently use as I'm confined to a pro controller U__U) I'm not sure what I can do to get rid of some undesirable villagers in my town - and I've tried time travelling, but in the end, I don't actually like doing it much more than for small things...

There doesn't seem to be a surefire way to get rid of them without forcing them out. Hitting them with nets and complaining to Isabelle was never proven to have them move out, not even when New Leaf was the newest game.

Just ignore them unless they run up to you/have a thought bubble over their head. Don't give them gifts, don't become friends with them. Talk to everyone EXCEPT them. They will eventually leave, but there's a chance someone else can try to move out instead. It's all random.

The only surefire way to remove a villager is to force them out via amiibo card.

You can use amiibo cards with the pro-controller! I have one and that is the only way I have scanned amiibo cards into my game

^ It depends on the type of controller they have. I have a pro controller that doesn't have an NFC reader.

some people say ignoring them works, but in my experience getting a villager out, after tting a few months in a row, the only villager who asked to move was lily, my newest moved in and most talked to in those past few months. so its clearly not even a matter of how long they've been there, or talked to, or been mean to. honestly, it seems totally random and spontaneous.

always be sure to talk when they have a thought bubble over their head to either dismiss or accept the move tho

Except for amiibo there is no real of forcing villagers out, however I have found that ignoring them completely is much more likely to make them move out in this game!

there is no surefire method. villagers aren't on a 6~ day ping to move out schedule like in new leaf. you just have to wait (or TT) until someone asks. I just cycled through 7 villagers in the last 20~ minutes. They ask me to move about every other time I reload my town after TT'ing.

Ignoring does nothing. Complaining to Isabelle does nothing. It's random. I do recognize that the higher my town rating is though, the more consistently they ask to move, so that may be a thing.

I say that because I have a second town on another switch which has a garbage rating and people rarely ask me to move out there.

Alright, slight new update; I managed to borrow my roommates joycon - and the villager shows up when I use the card, invite them to my camp... and then when i TT forward they dont show up? Is something wrong here?

the issue is, you dont need to TT when you invite them to your camp. they show up instantly. just walk out and they should be in the tent. Also, keep in mind, it takes 3 days for them to agree to move in, you have to build things for them during that time.
