Anyone who knows anything about me (which is probably almost no one here) knows that I'm a total newbie when it comes to Animal Crossing, but I've quickly fallen in love with the games and the overall theme of befriending animals and hanging out with them. I started with Pocket Camp, pre-ordered New Horizons, recently bought and started Wild World, and that brings me to what's next for me... New Leaf!

You might think "Well golly gee Banjo, doesn't it seem really soon to jump from Wild World to New Leaf? You haven't even played a month yet, cha-chomp?" If you did think that, hi Fang I love you please come visit me and also you're right...BUT there's a method to the madness that has overtaken me.

I am enjoying Wild World for what it is, and that's the closest thing I could grasp at to an original, true Animal Crossing game, without the bells and whistles and some of the downsides that come with both Pocket Camp and New Horizons. For me, specifically, it is the lack of true variety in the interactions with the villagers. New Horizons checks off so many boxes for what game needs to make me fall in love with it, but it just falls slightly short of being able to topple Banjo-Tooie as my favorite game of all time. Wild World has given me some of that, but also has fallen a little short too in what I thought I was going to be getting into. Not to worry, for I still fully plan on playing Wild World for a while more to get a good grasp on the game overall and perhaps I'll start really enjoying it pretty soon (probably after the Acorn festival is over). Follow my experiences here!

Anyways, that brings me to New Leaf. Part of the reason for getting New Leaf is because I hated playing Wild World on my old DS Lite. It's old, but more importantly it's small and hard to see things. I already looked up and saw that there is some stretching of DS games on the 2DS XL (and saw if I want original resolution to hold start and select as the game starts up, no worries) but it would be nice to see how it looks and feels on a newer handheld. Of course, if I was buying a 2DS XL, I might as well get New Leaf because I know that I want to play it, and I know prior to New Horizons, it was all the rage, and from what I see online it still is quite popular for many, many reasons.

At this time, I'm still waiting for my 2DS XL to come in as well as New Leaf, the former coming Tuesday but the latter hasn't shipped yet. I'm making this a placeholder for, just as I did with Wild World, me to catalog my experiences with the game, note any differences that are noteworthy to me, and so random people I don't know can say "hmm that Banjo fella sure is an odd bear" and I can pretend people read these things.

I type a lot, my boss has said the same thing. Anyways, I'll keep this thread updated on a daily basis if I can, as long as I'm able to play. Oh and for anyone interested, I did buy the Welcome Amiibo version from Best Buy that comes with an amiibo card, and with the amiibo cards being re-launched in November, I'm super psyched and hoping to nab some villagers I love. Really want to get Fang in this as he's not available in WW, but hey I'm happy with almost anyone! And I'm just excited! Oh boy!

Got my black/turquoise 2DS XL! Set it up with a New Leaf theme, just waiting for New Leaf to come in! I will continue playing Wild World in the meantime.

New Leaf is coming on Friday!!! Still playing Wild World and it's more enjoyable on the 3DS but I still find that there isn't enough to keep me entertained for hours on end. I'll play for a couple of hours tops but find myself dragging a bit.

New Leaf came early!!!! Oh my gosh, nobody prepared me for how freaking adorable this game is. The little main Street area is adorable, Label being here on our own is adorable, and after a few restarts due to me not knowing which buildings are which (wanted to put Town Hall in more of a central location) and also because I was being a little picky with the starter villagers, I have a bear! Well a cub, Pudge. Along with Robin and Elvis.

Based on the map, I have a penguin too! Aurora and Peck, the latter of whom I have not heard of or met yet.

Some screenshots I took (yay for that feature on the 3DS!)

Eek eek!

My favorite pelican! Though I did meet Pete later...

Right off the bat, compared to both Wild World and New Horizons, Tom Nook feels much more like a local DIY home guy (like those HGTV shows) than a money-crazed racoon (NH) or a store owner who assumes you don't have good work ethic (WW), which makes me like him so much more.

Right off the bat I like all my villagers. I'm not crazy about birds or lions in general, but I want to mix up my experiences. Unfortunately my game didn't come with an amiibo card like it said it would, but I plan on at least making an amiibo card for Fang to get him in. Otherwise I may just let villagers roll in naturally. Only other one I may scan in is Bluebear.

I might cry!

First impressions: the town is adorable, I love how useful all of the NPCs feel. There are way more than what was in WW or NH, and while NH gives you freedom, something about visiting main street to send your mail, do your shopping, etc. is just so charming. I also possibly lucked out in getting a shovel and fishing rod on day 1, so I was able to donate quite a few things my first day. I also got decent money from shells and bought a locker from Retail (happy to see Reese and Cyrus too!) so I already have substantial storage at home. I love the change of the flea market to use Retail as the flea market, and that you can convince villagers to buy items. I love that all the NPCs I know from Pocket Camp (and more!) are here. I also love that on my first night, Gulliver crashed on the beach and I helped him remember that he was going to Kenya! So many neat little things that I think may make me like this game much more than New Horizons, but time will tell. I bought Pokemon Y (full price too 😳) the day before this came in because I thought I would want something else to fill my time, but boy I should have waited. I don't know if I can put this down!

Bruh nobody replied to this post yet... Well I shall be the first! Ahh, New Leaf... I started in 2015 and I can tell ya, I got quickly sucked in. I agree with everything you said so far about the game, it's absolutely endearing and adorable. And I think it truly gives this homey feel that NH seems to lack but I think it's more like they're missing a lot of the core content that was present in New Leaf and other previous games (although I've never played any other older title even though I own Wild World lol just never got around to it, I guess and played a bit of Pocket Camp but quickly dropped it because it became a cash grab).

You'll love New Leaf even more every day you play it because every day you unlock new things and it never gets stale. ^w^

Day 2 of New Leaf was exciting!

Well first, last night was beautiful...

And I met Gulliver!!! Very cool seeing how he's utilized in this game vs NH.

Anyways, today was mostly focused on paying off my down payment for my house!

But also explored the campsite...

Anyways. having a blast!!

It's awesome to see someone playing New Leaf. I've only played NL, HHD, and NH but NL is my favourite by a mile. There's just something charming about it that I didn't get with new horizons and just makes you feel so relaxed. Glad to see you're having a fun time. :giggle:

It's really a lot of fun, and it's all due to the charm of moving in to a pre-existing town instead of starting up your own. It's making me like Tom Nook, making me like Reese, Pete, and all these small town characters that I know from pocket camp but have no context for so I never had a chance to really like them. It's like playing Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley if you got rid of the farming aspect, whereas I didn't feel that way about either WW or NH.

A lot of new people are getting into New Leaf, including me. :lemon: I started playing Pocket Camp at the beginning of the pandemic. I purchased a Switch with the intention of buying New Horizons—but never did. I also scored a great deal on a New 2DS XL, and purchased a copy of New Leaf for $19.99.

Since I already have the crafting grind in Pocket Camp and no desire to replicate that crafting process in any other Animal Crossing game, no desire to see lazy animals stretching, no desire to have repetitive dialogue (New Leaf can get repetitive, but not as repetitive as Pocket Camp), my interest in New Horizons has waned. (I read on the New Horizons forum and the dialogue sounds like the Pocket Camp dialogue.) I get my decorating fix from Pocket Camp and don’t need New Horizons to be a glorified decorating/crafting game for me where even fish bait has to be crafted.

I absolutely love New Leaf. I haven’t use my Switch at all, so it was kind of a waste of money. The 2DS XL is built like a little tank, and I really love the sturdy handheld device. Can’t imagine playing a real Animal Crossing game without a stylus on a handheld.

Like you, I find the game charming and I love that I discover new things about it every day.

New Horizons is a great game. I haven't played New Leaf enough to say that I like it better, but it certainly is more charming.

I took advantage of my homemade amiibo skills and using Wisp I have invited Fang! Pudge has also invited me to my first hangout at his place! Though I have a feeling I might be late... Which is stressing me out lol I don't want to miss out on my first Animal Crossing hangout.

I have a feeling the surge, if you want to call it that, of interest in New Leaf is likely due to the same reason that I jumped on buying a 2DS XL and the game - I've been playing New Horizons since it came out, and I love it but starting around September and now definitely in October it's becoming a bit of a drag. I still play every morning to do a few things, but I don't really play more than an hour and a half. New Leaf fills that void of what's missing in New Horizons as well as gives me the sense of new content to play in an Animal Crossing game, which is realistically just starting a new game from scratch that has almost the same features as New Horizons but has more features in certain aspects that are more desirable to me. To me.

That 7pm is so moody and somber, I love it. It has a bit more depth to it than the 6pm music in New Horizons, but helps to wind down the day just as well.

Oh and I made it to Pudge's!

So glad you're enjoying New Leaf! I also love the 7pm music. It's one of my favorite hourly tracks in New Leaf so I always try to set my dream address during that time.

Today was an exciting day! I reached 100% approval rating from my neighbors, so Isabelle is moving forward with the town permit thingy.

Not only that but...

FANG IS MOVING IN OH MY CHOMP!

BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!!!

Aurora requested to stop by for a visit! It was adorable. In fact, she's still hanging out with me!

On a side note, this didn't happen today but I wanted to share how BLOWN my mind was when I found out you can sit on the rocks!
Ekop-SoU8AAAmEx.jpg

Anyways, overall I'm liking that I can connect little things that exist in New Horizons or Pocket Camp back to New Leaf. For example, the music that plays when Isabelle greets you in NL is the same music, slightly altered, that plays during the morning announcements in NH! Or like how you can sometimes break a rock and a mineral appears, like the little mining expedition in PC! Little things...

I'm also finding that I forgot about my mayor role for about 2 days...I was so busy keeping up with villagers, catching bugs, selling stuff, donating to the museum, shaking trees, posting adorable things to twitter, mailing letters, shopping...oh my gosh there's so many fun things to keep me occupied!

Some more things of note that I'm enjoying:
  • Have yet to have two villagers repeat the same thing to me
  • Isabelle feels useful and I actually like talking with her each day
  • Tom Nook isn't so bad
  • I actually see Harvey more frequently
  • More varied villager requests
  • Sending letters is more enticing, since villagers ask or talk about how they enjoy getting letters, even sometimes in the letters they send to you! So you feel somewhat obligated but somewhat more excited to respond back to them! I still wish they called out specifics in the letter that you wrote, but hey maybe one day?

Just met Saharah for the first time! Interesting how she works in this game. I got wooden knot wall and closed road flooring. Thankfully the wallpaper is exactly what I needed!
