Can friendship levels go down?

I think this was probably already mentioned but I just wanted to add my personal experience confirming that neglect/time/absence will not decrease friendship levels. I have gotten 2 villager photos after giving presents right after coming back from a couple months away from the game

Do you have to give your islanders gifts or do you just have to talk to them daily for your friendship level to go up?

I can't find the guide I used to use, but if i remember correctly talking to villagers gives you one 'friendship point', and giving islanders gifts gives you a varying amount of points depending on what you give them (so fruit is maybe +1 while furniture is +3).

It will go up just by talking to them once a day, but giving them gifts will make it go up more. You can give them wrapped fruit if you don't want to mess with their house interiors or wardrobe.

Here's the link with the guide to everything we know about friendship: https://yuexr.github.io/acnh/friendship.html

The fruit doesn't need to be wrapped.

My wife and I got most of the villager's pics with the full inventory/stacked fruit method. :)

Thank you :) I have been to busy trying to get my island looking good that I haven't spent time trying to get my friendship levels up but I will try this method thank you :)

I just remembered there's also a whole thread about it here too! https://www.belltreeforums.com/thre...d-photo-mechanic-1-6-x-updated-nov-29.562266/

I should probably clarify just so no one is confused
  • Wrapping gives a +1 bonus point on gifts (faster leveling up)
  • Wrapping fruit is necessary to receive a photo back during an interaction because the sell value has to be 750 or greater (2 non-native fruit, 3 coconuts, or 8 native fruit)
  • Wrapping is not necessary when doing the fruit stack trick (receiving the photo by mail)

I remember reading in a friendship guide that friendship isn't affected if you ignore your villager. The only way it goes down is if you hit them with a net, gift them weed or garbage or push them.

Other than that you can fast foward/ignore your villagers as much as you'd like and at any point you can always go back to normal. They'll mention that you haven't talked to them in a while, and that's about it.

I don't believe in the level up. That's Pocket Camp.

I've never wrapped fruit and got Wolfgang's pic from a coconut before nintendo did something.

I know now, or have done since nintendo messed with the game, it has to be non native fruit.
That's how I got the other nine pics.

My wife has never given a gift to any villager, and got Maddie's pic after a treasure hunt.
