Is anyone else getting tired of memberships and in-app/game purchases. I think that it's sort of unfair sometimes and I don't like it.

Yeah, it all started with the Online membership. It's so crazy, playing Pok?mon X connected to the world was so much fun, now it's something that you have to buy extra like a DLC. Nintendo is putting money barriers down just because they can, like just imagine how much they must make through merchandise alone.

I wanted to see if this was caused by a bad year or so, but I did find this article: Nintendo Has So Much Money in the Bank It Could Lose Money Every Year Until 2052

And honestly these optional purchases for optional things weren't even that bad, but now they're starting with subscriptions for proper functions and it's just going to get worse because they'll keep making money from all these things. :s

I get that companies are out to get money but the greediness turns me off and it's gotten to the point where I'd rather just miss out and give them the finger than allow them to get away with it.

One of the reasons why I stopped playing Mario Kart Tour after giving that game a chance, even if I was not a fan of it from the very beginning. The cash grab is strong is this game. I realized that while you're able to play it for free for a while, however at a certain point, you don't come forward at all if you don't own the right characters or karts, at least from my experience. If you have not the huge luck on your side to get character or karts you need via the rubies and coins you can get in-game via doing missions or by winning them, you getting forced to spend money so that you can come forward. Especially the fact that 200cc is locked behind a pay wall sucks so much, like that mode is free in damn Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, wtf.

After all, I hate those paid membership offers or in-game purchases so much. I will never spend any money into those and supporting their cash grab trash with this if I can play a game as long as possible for free. Like Pocket Camp for example, can play that game without issues and without spending a cent into it and also found thanks to Gulliver a cheaper way to get some items from those fancy fortune cookies.

MK Tour was just sad, sadly I see a lot of people playing it here because "lol mario nintendo" and just really rude and mining money methods. The stuff they added with PC is dumb, but at least you don't really need them like MK and Nintendo Online **** for Switch("need" for MKT because everything is basically locked if you want a good experience), and at least they give a free trial for PC.

I think online is the worst though because you already pay for console, game, your internet and now you have to pay for even going online on a console.. not ok.

I don't mind paying Switch membership especially since it's not as expensive as PSN/Xbox Live membership but nintendo really needs to make improvements on their online play if they are charging us for it. Smash Ultimate online is a mess and it pisses me off to no end

As far as paid memberships and in game purchases go, I feel more and more companies are jumping on the bandwagon and it's getting downright annoying.

I don't mind DLC in terms of content expansions and patches since it's just more of a thing I like...As long as it's significant. Stuff like the expansions and content patches in World of Warcraft which bring countless new things each time, characters in a fighting game, maps in a multiplayer game.

Stuff like microtransactions, loot boxes, battle passes etc though, it's just 'non content' designed to just keep people perpetually spending. It's just wrong really. I don't have time for that crap and it's a embarrassing that people have just accepted it to such an extent that it borders on the edge of "we've just got to accept this is how gaming is now" and "hello, this is the government, we have to step in because you idiots clearly can't look after yourselves".

Paid subscriptions? Depends what it's for really but generally no because they're usually not good.

Subscriptions to actually play games online are just a cash grab in general. For the longest time we've been able to play games online for free since the costs to do so are ultimately minimal. Suddenly though, the Xbox comes along and it costs ?50 a year. Other companies see Microsoft getting money for nothing and slowly follow suit, PS4 and Switch jumping on the free money bandwagon later on. All it is for platform holders is passing the minimal costs they do have on to the customer as well as charging on top of that for the sake of charging more because really, does Sony really need ?1,800,000,000‬ a year to keep servers running? Do they Fu...No, no they don't.

Again, like with microtransactions, this has been so widely accepted with the help of consumers making excuses on behalf of corporations that this just isn't going to change. It's sad, but we've got to accept it.

A special shoutout to the Switch and Nintendo online, a service that uses peer to peer online and thus they are literally just charging us to use our own internet connection that we've already paid our service provider for. A service literally demanding money for nothing.

I used to think PSN+ was neat when it originally came out, a subscription where they just give you some games and that's it. That's not a bad model and is something I'm basically still subscribed to via the Humble Monthly Bundle (though I can cancel that and keep my games, whereas you had to have PSN+ to use those games)...Then they decided they could strongarm some more money out of people if they locked multiplayer behind it like Microsoft.

Vote with your wallet. There's nothing wrong in playing older games.

What gets me is pre-ordering something that's digital. Like there's no limited quantity in stocks, why do it?

That's why I like pre 360/ps3 era gaming the most. Once they started implementing DLC's and forgetting about unlocking stuff through skills I was very picky on which game I would buy. But I get why the companies try to milk their customers, because its more money.

I hate having to pay a membership for the Switch tbh. Like, come on. The 3DS Internet service and its previous consoles were free. So why the actual heck did they change that and charge it??? It makes them seem so money-hungry, which is ironic cuz they're already a billionaire company so why do you need more money ffs...

Last gen feels like an awkward middle ground for some games in terms of monetisation ruining things.

Fighting games for example. Yea, it's neat that you can just download new characters rather than rebuying Street Fighter IV 3 times...But I don't understand why being able to unlock characters regularly through arcade mode, maybe come across one or two surprise characters you didn't know were in the game, slowly got phased out as a result.

Or that buying a set of alternate colour pallets seems pretty tame now when compared to buying limitless amounts of otherwise difficult to obtain in-game currency or the literal hundreds of individually sold and overpriced costumes in Dead or Alive.

The 3DS/Wii U internet service wasn't worth paying for though...Not that Switch's is any better despite having a price tag now, but they know people will pay for it otherwise you're being locked out of major aspects of games like Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon 2.

Despite the image they put out, they're not really any different from any other big gaming company. Having literally all the money in the world still wouldn't be enough money.

Absolutely. Luckily I quit playing games like that before the whole membership thing began to invade.

The only game I play now is Pokemon GO, and they've yet to introduce memberships into the game, which I'm very happy about. Niantic has kept the game fresh for the last three and a half years, and I enjoy playing it very much. AC Pocket camp on the other hand, that game definitely seemed like a cash grab, hardly worth spending money on.

I agree! The only way I can see it is to just opt out. I know you'll "miss out" on some things but it's up to you to decide if missing out is worth not spending the money.

One could argue its because of the complexity of networks and netcoding infrastructures, servers, but I think ever since Xbox live paid service became a success, other companies took note and followed suite. If you look at PC gaming and steam, they dont have a paid service to play a game online. The internet bill is enough lol but yea, blame the gamers lol

I hate that it is such a standard for the gaming industry now. I don't mind paying for dlc as long as they are not necessary to complete the game and are just a fun extra (ex. A different costume or an optional quest), but some companies really sell us an unfinished product and then expect us to cough up more and more bucks.

Yeah it's definitely because the other gaming companies are doing it. Think about the Switch game prices. There's no reason they should be $80+. They only are because Microsoft and Sony's games are.

There's no "server" for the switch. It's one internet connection to another. I'm pretty sure anyway.

i mostly think the nintendo online service is stupid. stupid microsoft. Though im using a microsoft PC...
have a cheesy video
it swears so be careful

Yeah, though I heard it's basically the same in quality and why do they have to charge for their own servers, lol. It'd been way more logic is the DS/Wii was to paid for lol. But yeah in my opinion they are just money hungry and if I ever get a Switch I won't pay like... uh. No, not supporting band-wagon jumpers.
