Cash Grabs?

:/ This is why I despise modern gaming. I'm way pickier about modern games cause of how much they gouge people. When I truly came to hate most of todays gaming companies, was with Asura's Wrath. Which I didn't buy, but my best friend did. He was so excited to play and I was excited to watch. Then, you get to the end and it's not actually the end. Then you get a message saying if you want to play the last 3 levels, you have to buy the DLC! You know you want to! You gotta get that epic ending you've been waiting for! It should honestly be illegal to do stuff like that. I have no problem shunning a game or making sure I don't give money to a game company that does this kind of stuff. There are plenty of other great games to play and other hobbies to partake in. I don't understand why so many millions of gamers are so desperate to let themselves be ripped off cause they just have to play every triple a title or justify this kind of stuff over "loyalty" to a series or company. That's just my take on it. Sorry if it was a little intense. XD

Yeah, this. Honestly those fanpeople can be very annoying and can never take off their (company) loyalty glasses and wake up from it. Sadly that's what keeps it going rather than taking serious stance against it.

Last gen feels like an awkward middle ground for some games in terms of monetisation ruining things.

Fighting games for example. Yea, it's neat that you can just download new characters rather than rebuying Street Fighter IV 3 times...But I don't understand why being able to unlock characters regularly through arcade mode, maybe come across one or two surprise characters you didn't know were in the game, slowly got phased out as a result.

Or that buying a set of alternate colour pallets seems pretty tame now when compared to buying limitless amounts of otherwise difficult to obtain in-game currency or the literal hundreds of individually sold and overpriced costumes in Dead or Alive.

This is how I feel about Mortal Kombat 11. The game itself costs between 50-70$, then there's two additional characters Frost and Shao Kahn for 6-7$ each (Frost can already be unlocked via Story Mode, so what's the point?) a DLC pack for 40$ which includes 6 more characters released over time and exclusive skins and an ingame store where you have have the option to pay for Time Krystals to unlock more content.

While I find the paid subscriptions ridiculous, I'm actually more disgusted by the loot boxes (or in Pocket Camp - Fortune Cookies). With the loot boxes you don't always know what you're getting and many times you get something you've gotten before. Plus it's basically gambling in disguise which is then being introduced to many, many players who are under 18 years old. I read a study that said people under 18 who are constantly spending money buying loot boxes now have a much better chance of becoming addicted to gambling as adults. And for anyone of any age with an addictive personality the chances are even higher. Setting off a possible gambling addiction in people to make money that the company doesn't even need is insidious.

I don?t mind paying for the online membership with Nintendo, but I also didn?t buy it until I actually needed/wanted it.

Loot boxes and micro transactions are annoying, but I still feel overall just kinda eh about them. I don?t buy them, and by the time they started getting popular I was already an adult and I?m not going to pay with my real money for some special furniture items for an app.

Personally, I believe in-app purchases and memberships, along with anything else that can enhance your gameplay via a purchase, is rather greedy. But at the same time- especially if the app is free- I understand the concept around it. Now when a game is almost unenjoyable/difficult simply because you refuse to pay to play, that's when things become an issue.

Back when I played the app Angry Birds Transformers, I completed the main 'storyline'. I was about to focus on events, but I was forced to compete with countless players who paid their way to the top. Thousands of gems, top-tier characters, and almost all the items/upgrades. I had nothing against them (it's their choice to spend money, and I don't have the right to gripe about it), but it became impossible. There wasn't much around this except grinding, but when you couldn't compete with anyone, how could you climb your way up?

I've found this to be true with many other games. A couple of other apps I can think of are Mario Kart Tour and Pocket Camp if I figure in Nintendo.

But like I said, I don't have anything against those who pay to play. I don't agree with it, so I don't do it. But in the grand scheme of things there's not much one can do about the companies and how they want to make money with their games.
